Nose is lightly malted but no spice is evident. The tongue is nutty and malted but definitely more hops than a German Octoberfest beer. Good to see a little spin on a standard style. Finishes with a little bit crisp hoppiness. Not overly complex, but a good beer nonetheless. CaptainCougar (5538), Rockville, Maryland, USA

Lightly sour caramel malt and musty grain aroma. Body is lighty sweet and dry with a decent balance of hops. Sticky earthy malt finish speckled with noble hops. An ok oktoberfest. quantum24 (32), New York, USA

I have never had an Octoberfest beer that tasted Belgian. I will never drink this one again, although I like the other Smuttynose beer styles. Cobra (1066), In a van, down by the river, Maryland, USA

Poured out a deep amber color, reminiscent of a well worn brown belt. Aromas are of sweet malts, and a slight aroma of hops. Not too much in the hops, but just right. Clean, crisp taste and finish make for a treat of a fall beer. I only wish I'd known about this beer earlier.
Finishes crisp, clean, and with a slight hoppy bite to it.

A lot maltier, darker and hoppier than any German Oktoberfest. This is a very big Oktoberfest and I will be drinking much more of this. I am really liking this Big Beer Series. goz (359), Chelmsford, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 22, 2003 Pours a nice medium amber, with a large tan head that mostly recedes, leaving small bit of lace. Aroma is a pleasant mix of toasted malt, some caramel malt, and a bit of hops. Flavor carries on the caramel, less toast than the aroma had, and ends with a nice crisp hoppiness that wisks the other flavors away. Medium in body, medium carbonation, very easy drinking. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 10, 2003 Deep orange-amber hue. Smokey malt, dark chocolate caramel nose. Small beige head. Sweet, caramel, thin body, finishes kinda dusty and weird. Not that bad, I guess.
