Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

Bottled, BB February ’09. Poured a nice shade of clear coppery-brown with a huge cap of sticky beige head. The aroma picked up great character from toasted nutty notes with lesser caramel and chocolate present.. airy, light hop impression surrounded.. left cocoa on the back of the nostrils. The flavor had a bit of lactic sourness laced through, which was a bit off.. nutty notes and sweeter chocolates at the core.. mild earthy bitterness around.. finished sweet and dry, again with the odd sourness. Light-medium bodied and toasty on the palate with good balance most of the way.. really dried out on the back.. tasty with just a few off notes.

A clear, dark, cherrywood tinted body is crowned by a small, smooth blanket of cream colored foam. Skinny flares and tiny spots of lace dot the glass. The nose is based on toasted caramel and brown sugar, with hints of hazelnut and mocha roast. Traces of indiscernible dark fruits creep in as well. Flavors follow suit, showing nice balance between the sweet brown malts and the roasty, toasty coffee and biscuit. Hints of earthen hops lend further balance. The palate is smooth, almost as if flakes oats were used, and a good amount of coffee roast lingers well after the finish. Nice brown ale.

12oz bottle, Variety Sampler Mixed 12pk. Pleasant pour. Medium brown, foamy light tan head. Aroma of pale malts and toasted malt. Nice caramel and nice toffee. Flavor is simple. Toasted bread + toffee. Nice. Finishes with a hint of nuttiness. Well balanced with a mild bitterness. Light medium bodied, creamy texture. A great session! 19mar09

Bottle... Poured reddish brown with a thin beige head. Smoked, grainy aroma with a slight nutty character. Low carbonation, charred, smoked malts with cocoa and caramel-nut malts. A little bit of hops in the finish.

there is a decent amount of flavor but there is more bitterness than what is expected. the malts and medium and the hops are strong with a deep pine flavor.

The aroma is somewhat like a brown ale. It does have sweet toasted malt and a touch of chocolate but it is also a touch sour. The appearance is dark amber with a small head. The flavor is like the aroma. The palate is smooth. Overall this is barely an average beer.

Bottle, light coppery brown. Almost no head. Malty caramel nose. Same malty, caramel, flavor, but a bit grainy. Sweeter on the nose than on the palate, finishes with a little bit of hops. Med mouthfeel. Decent brown ale, like a slightly more caramel amber.
