Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

Bottle. Pours dark orange-brown with small beige head. Aroma of molasses. Taste initially medium sweet molasses and caramel. Then moves through citrus-sour to slightly bitter, ending in lingering sweet/sour caramel aftertaste. Mouthfeel: low carbonation is surprisingly lively palate cleansing.

Pours deep amber into a Shaker. Offwhite micro head with typically excellent Smutty head. Sweet caramel malt aromas. Crisp and sweet upfront. Full in the middle with a slight hop finish.

tried 2/23/08: bottle. Smell is faint of malts. Palate features light carbonation and soft, somewhat oily mouthfeel. Simple sweet flavor with light cream and balancing hops. Well crafted, but not particularly interesting, I was disappointed.

Pours a dark brown colour with reddish undertones. Aroma is buscuity, with soft roasted nuts and cinnamon in the aroma. Taste is creamy, fairly malted with a sweet finish.

On tap @ MacGregors. Poured a dark amber color with a slight tan head. Aroma was slightly sweet malt with some caramel. Flavor was that, along with a little bit of bitter at the end. Not bad.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown to red color with a nice tan head. Aroma was both sweet malty and bittering hops. Tasted good when eating something salty, otherwise it was too sweet. The bitterness seemed to be an afterthought to balance a sweet beer. Overall it was a good drinkable libation.

Bottle thanks to MDS. This brown ale poured a deep copper with a generous white froth leaving good lace. Lookin’ good. The nose is heavy on the caramel malts and is followed by toffee, raisin bread, demererra, and spicy notes including cinnamon and cardamon in low quantities. This beer shows very sweet malts with brown sugar and prunes. The flavour is also loaded with an essence of sugar in the raw anddemererra. Unfortunately, I hate demererra and find it too sweet. This beer is only 5.7%, but I had to sip it like it was a 10% barleywine because of the sweetness. This isn’t a bad beer, but I just really can’t get over the sweetness even with a bit of bitterness in the finish, it is too much. This is a style I always have difficulty with, but not a style that I am going to give up on. Thanks for the bottle Mike!

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear reddish dark brown with a moderate tan head that dissipates pretty quick. Roasty caramel and a bit of fruityness in the nose. Nutty roast malt and carmel flavors with a hint of peat smoke. Low hop bitterness and a fairly light mouthfeel with a dry finish.
