Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

Bottle and served in standard pint glass: Deep brown hue with a solid frothy off-white head and good lace. The aroma has notes of walnut, dusty and musty yeast, fig newtons, caramel and toffee, and a hint of soap. The taste is sweet and malty upfront with some mild dark fruit and nutty cake is support. A brief moment with some herbal hops towards the chalky finish. The mouth feel is thin and watery, chalky and dry. An okay Brown Ale but nothing worth seeking out.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with decent 1 finger head. Nose is sweet candy sugar, caramel and nutty smell in the back. Taste is light brown sugar, little bit of hops. Overall to thin and watery. Glad to have tried this at least.

Deep amber/brown pour with frothy brown head. Aroma of malt, wood, and plum. Flavors of malt, sugar, and a dry finish are this guy here. Not a bad beer, just a solid drinker.

Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Ale ABV: 5.7% IBU: ? Calories: ? Volume: 12 fl oz Glass: tulip Purchased at: 12 pack sampler at Joe Canal’s in West Windsor, NJ Consumed on/at: Thursday March 6th, 2008. sensory first impression: A doppelganger for sugary mix iced tea, with same color, haze and head. Aroma is nice, flowery, enticing. Smuttynose likes bottle conditioning - I always have to pour it twice. The flavor is not too far off of iced tea either - a very calm, enjoyable brew, but nothing to stop you short. Sides of the mouth getting a slight tingle - not a lot of action here. A quiet beer in visuals, activity, and taste, but not bad at all. Aroma/Olfactory: Malt flavor is: brewed, lemony, citrus, and a bit of cinnamon. Hop flavor is: herbal, quiet, mellow. Yeast flavor is: dust and earth. Other flavors include: ginger, raisin, rose Visuals/Appearance: Color is: pale, reddish brown, very much looks like freshly mixed lipton iced tea. Liquid is: hazy and cloudy from conditioning, and dark, but translucent. Head and lace are: nearly not there. Again, like iced tea. Taste/Flavor: Maltiness or Sweetness level is: medium - like a diet tea. Hoppiness or Bitterness level is: not there at all. A lightweight in hops. Sour level is: not there. Palate/Tactile: Body or Mouthfeel is: very light Texture is: thin, smooth, and easygoing. Carbonation is: flat Finish is: short and a bit watery, but not unpleasant. Overall experience: Old brown dog is appropriate. Not a lot of bite - easygoing - half blind - friendly. Doesn’t like to run a lot. A drink in search of a shade tree. It could do with some food, but something crisp and rather neutral, so as to not overwhelm the beer. Maybe perfectly paired with Whole Wheat Matzo, which I love. The color is beautiful. Not one of my favorites, but I’d pick it over many others.

Poured to a reddish brown color with off-white head that lingered through most of the glass and left good lacing. Nose was muted, but what was there was a malty roasted nuts. Flavor also went down the malted nut path, with just a hint of hops. Body was a bit on the thin side, and the finish a tad metallic, though long and pleasant overall. Not bad for a brown ale.

A pretty decent brown ale. Nose is a lot of caramel and nuttiness with a little bit of fruit essence thrown in. Pours a rather clear amber/brown color. It has a strong caramel and toffee flavor with some hazelnut in there as well. A little bit thin, but good compared to a lot of brown ales that don’t try to stand apart with obscene amounts of hops.
