Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

Clear russet appearance with a small tan head. Nutty, caramel malt aroma with a herbal edge. Roasted malt flavor balanced with floral hops exuding ample bitterness. Smooth, medium bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel leading to a dry, lingering finish.

12 oz bottle. Lightly hazed brown with a thin off white head. Rich, earthy malt and nut nose, some light wood notes. Mildly bitter flavor, nut and caramel flavors. A bit acidic. Clean finish. Good stuff.

Sampled at GWBF 2007. On tap. Pours a clear amber with a moderate off-white head that was gone in about 30 seconds. Pleasant caramel malt in the aroma. Flavor is again caramel malt with some light hops bitterness at the finish. A decent brown ale.

Not a bad beer at all. I don’t think that it compares in any way to an old ale, despite the commercial blurb and despite some evident toffee notes in the malts. Basically it’s a solid, quaffable, and fairly hoppy brown ale.
