Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

12. oz. bottle. Pours a nice clear brown with a tan head. The aroma sweet malt, brown sugar and some roasted characters. The taste is not as sweet as the aroma suggests. It has some caramel and roasted notes and comes to a dry finish. A bit too light bodied.

Murky brownish-red body with a finger of offwhite head. Smells hoppy with some malt. Taste is equally malty sweet and hoppy. Malt may even overpower the hop somewhat, but is generally pretty well-ballanced. Tasty. Medium bodied. Tasty, solid ale. I’m impressed, and would definitely get this one again...

Both bottle and tap versions offer a very pleasant caramel malt aroma. They both appear very dark amber in the glass, but the draft version shows more carbonation. The flavor pretty well matches the aroma, offset by a subtle floral hop presence. The lack of carbonation detracts from the palate. The malt sweetness lingers in the finish. P. S. A more recent bottle sample was markedly drier and hoppier, thus better balanced.

Pours brown with almost no head. Malty sweet aroma. The flavor is sweet, malty, a touch of spicyness, brown sugar, toffeeish. Slight maple syupy aspect. A touch of flowery hops. Very light bitterness. Not bad.

clear reddish brown with a tan head that quickly diminishes. nice nutty toffee aroma with a surprising hint of hops. sweet toffee flavor with some bitter notes....the flavor is a bit lighter than the aroma. toffee flavor leads into a bittersweet medium dry finish. body is a bit light. i didnt know what to think about the carbonation. when the bottle was first opened it was way too fizzy. especially on the finish it was almost soda pop like carbonation. but then after the beer sat for a while the carbonation died off leaving the beer a bit flat. certainly drinkable and tasty enough. this beer (or maybe my bottle) just seemed to have some carbonation issues.

Bottle purchased at Breeze-Thru liquor in Milwaukee. A friend of mine from Madison is a big Smuttynose fan, but this is the first one of their beers I tried, and I was impressed. Appearance was a redbrown with white head composed of fairly large bubbles, which unfortunately didn’t stick around long and left very little lacing. Aroma was very good. It smelled like caramel malt, chocolate and caramel. And the taste matched very closely to the aroma, with notes of chocolate and caramel with a certain alcohol overtone at the finish. As it got warmer in my glass, it seemed to become more coffee-ish.

12 oz. bottle via trade with hopdog - Pours a deep amber color with a good size off white head. Light lacing. Has a light toasty malt aroma. Light caramel malt flavor. Light to medium body. Nothing fancy, worth a try. Thanks Steve.

Bottle from Ty. I always get a smile on my face when I get Smuttynose in trade. I love the brewery. This was a rich dark copper. A great looking Brown Ale. Nose is lightly touched by some caramel-chocolate aromas, not heavy but still there. The hops were well hidded and I really did not taste them much but again,as in the aroma, the flavor was light but still rich for a Brown Ale.
