Dark caramel color with a half-inch tan head. Nose is mild but pleasant. Taste is excellent, with fruitiness and yeast predominant. Almost bready, slightly sweet. Very smooth, and only slightly bitter finish. I was impressed. wilkie (1191), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

There is a light malty, honey nut aroma. It is a classic smooth brown ale. It is hoppy and slightly bitter. A nice hearty ale DarkMagus (433), San Jose, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 31, 2006 Coarse and bubbly light brown head. Sweet and gentle malt, caramel, hops aroma. Similarly sweet, but bold range of malt, caramel, molasses, and hops flavors. A very bittersweet and nutty finish. A nice amount of carbonation, very light and refreshing, but tasty brew. Great, and very well-balanced. Glouglouburp (2859), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

I feel weird giving it a bad review when everybody else here seem to have like it. Did I get a poorly conditioned sample? Nose was mould and rot. Taste was wheat, very ripe fruits and all bran cereals. Felt like a dunkel weizen, a below average one that is. Maybe the balance between the old dog and the brown stuff was off in my sample. Taste was slightly nutty and contained all the elements of a good brown ale. Hop finish blended very well, I think that was what impressed me the most. I have had many brown ales that had a hoppy finish that didnt really seem to fit well. This one was great. As far as I can tell, smuttynose is the stuff.
