Made a good appearance, poured a reddish brown with foamy lacing that settled into a thin sudsy lacing, good carbonation.
Had a malty nose, toasted and a light caramel, earthy with a fruity esters.
A crisp and smooth medium bodied mouthfeel, good drinkability.
Big malty taste, sweet toasted with a subtle caramel, light fruity esters, with a mild earthy hoppiness and a sweet toasted grainy and fruity finish.
Another tasty brew from Smuttynose, a fine English brown ale, well worth trying.

The aroma has caramel notes along with nuts and rye bread. Flavour is malty with caramel sweetness and cookie backing. Soft and reasonably sticky - medium body. Notable bitterness in the end. Good stuff.

Nutty, biscuity and flavorful...very rich and a bit creamy on the palate. Those yankees can produce a fine brown. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 2, 2006 Right down the middle for the style and relative to my tastes. Standard amber-brown pour with a small head that didn’t last more than a few sips. Lacing was good and the mouthfeel smooth, carbonated, and medium bodied. Flavor was nutty and enjoyable with a mild hop finish. Definitely a beer that improves with increasing temperature. Good balance for a nut brown, which can often come across too sweet. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 26, 2006 bottle-crimson red accented by a sudsy-off-white head. aroma has notes of nice earthy hops (lots of hops for a brown, but really not all that hoppy of an aroma), toasted nuts, light chocolate, and a light mineral quality. flavors showcase the hops up front followed by notes of peanuts and cashews. body is somewhat light and somewhat watery, but pretty good for the style. a rather unique and tasty concoction of a brown ale that i enjoyed. This beer has a very dark red, but not quite brown color. The head has a pale color and was light but was present the entire glass. The taste was very malty and crisp and has a plesent but not overpowering aftertaste. A very good and enjoyable brown ale. HighGateGuy95 (13), Keene, New Hampshire, USA
