Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

I think of this as the flagship of Smuttynose. A very well balanced brown ale with great nutty flavor and carmel malts that is properly offset by its hops. A decent looking beer that is suited for both a slow analysis or a long hard session.

Pours a murky red brown color with thin filmy tan head. Aroma hits the nose as soon as the bottle is opened with a robust nuttiness, sweet profile from some chocolate and caramel malts, very smooth roasted malt ending. Flavor starts off with a sweet maltiness, moves into a light chocolate, slight citrus hoppy middle and ends with a very smooth, light nutty ending. Beer has the perfect amount of carbonation for the style, a very smooth and the density is just right. Overall one of the more enjoyable brown ales I have had in a long time.

Nice nutty, smoky flavor pretty much overpowers other aspects. A good beer if you know what you’re getting.

Clear brown pour with a lasting tan head. Aroma is nutty with some chocolate. Medium bodied with a nice level of carbonation. Nutty flavor, roasty and a lingering, but very light, bitterness. This is a pretty smooth and good tasting brown ale.

Bottle. Murky brown. Aroma is malty, nutty and roasty. Some caramel as well. Flavor is full of caramel malt and some light nut flavor. A bit of hops is a surprise on the finish. Not bad.
