Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

bottle: pint glass: Pours a deep brown leaving 2 fingers off white head. The nose was outright weird... a but metallic, perhaps smelling like wet dog?! The taste upfront was more complex than expected... coffee, roasted malts, caramel. The beer should be more creamy but the carbonation is way to high... really killed it for me.

Bottle purchased at Total Wine & More (Ft. Myers, FL) - Small very fizzy tan head that mostly diminished, virtually no lacing, opaque, and an orange brown hue. The aroma is malty, caramel, nutty, mildly hoppy, and some hints of smoke. The flavor mimicks the aroma. The mouthfeel is mildly tingly and this is a medium bodied beer. Overall, this beer is easy on the palate and would consider drinking it again.

So you look at this one and you think it’s going to be great. Not to clear, good brown/amber color. Good white head. little lacing. But then its like a sprite with alcohol. Carbonated almost. Not my style. Don’t really care much for the hops in this one either.

Brown color with a small head. Aroma is sweet, nutty, some earthyness and faint hops. Flavor has some grain, nuts, coffee and light hops. Nice caramel sweetness and nuttyness. Good body and nice mouthfeel.

12oz bottle. Brown pour with a modest light tan head. Nuts, caramel and roasted malts in the aroma. Toasted malt tastes with a hint of chocolate. Overly sweet brown sugars generally put me off of the style - but the sweet levels are understated here. Nothing crazy complex though.

bottle. pours a deep copper with a quarter inch white head which lasts throughout... some mild malt notes along with some nuts through the nose... medium creamy body with nuts, caramel and malts throughout the mouth. a mild bitterness on the finish along with more sweet malts. overall this is a really nice brown ale with a tremendous mouthfeel.

On tap at Tully’s in Amherst, NY. Overall just kinda meh. Brown pour, minimal khaki-ish head. Nice lacing. The flavor was a bit of a letdown though - I was hoping for nuts, coffee, something, but instead didn’t get much. There was some hops, some sweetness, but nothing really exceptional to wow me. Slightly fizzier mouthfeel than I was hoping for as well. Maybe it’s because I was expecting an English brown.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a medium foamy head with OK retention and no lacing. Aroma of deep caramel malt with light notes of molasses and some grain is quite enjoyable. Taste is a nice enough mix between some deep rich caramel malt with cereal and a light subtle touch of molasses. Hops are not very apparent which might be a good thing considering the nice malt base. Body is slightly above average with good carbonation. Well done – nice session beer.

Not doggy, but definitely a strong coffee taste, almost overwhelmingly so. If coffee is your thing, you’ll probably like it.
