Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

One of the better pumpkin ales I’ve tried. This one does a fine job of blending the cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin one expects from a pumpkin ale, with a nicely grassy hop notes toward the back of your palate. Quite drinkable.

Very spicy and distinct pumpkin aroma. Not much else, just lots of spice. Pretty clear golden color, small white head that disappeared. Flavor isn’t really too much of pumpkin until the finish and the aftertaste. Not that great, average mouthfeel. Maybe I’d drink it with some pumpkin pie.

I’ve always been one to give everything a chance, but I just cannot get into pumpkin beers. No matter how many I try, I simply can’t find one that I like. This one is no exception. The body is a cloudy, glowing amber-orange color. There is a very small off-white head that settles instantly to a wispy film with a bubbly edge. Minimal spotty lacing noted. The aroma shows baked pumpkin pie, nutmeg, cinnamon, and hints of freshly peeled carrots. The flavor follows suit, with huge pumpkin and nutmeg flavors accompanied again by a surprising dose of carrots. The entire brew is quite vegetal from start to finish. Medium-light body. This is well crafted, but regardless, I just can’t get into it.

Draft at the Crocodile Lounge. Good pumpkin in the aroma, and a little bit of grain. The initial flavor was of the sweet pumpkin and malt, but the finish was a little bland. It could have used some more spice.

The aroma is pleasant and big, it hits with the season’s best: pumpkin, nutmeg, and maybe squash. A nice appearance with a rusty orange color, not entirely clear, and with a big, creamy, off-white head. The flavor does not match the aroma quite as well, but the pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg tastes are all present; quite sweet overall, slightly bitter. Soon after the pour the palate feel was great, with a creamy, fizzy effect, but as the head faded it became a bit flatter. It’s a good seasonal beer, and captures the pumpkin flavors and scents, but does not stand out as much as I had hoped.

Bottle sampled. pours deep orange with a small beige head. Aroma of cinnamon, brown sugar, and pumpkins. the flavor is sweet, brown sugar, cinnamon, pumpkin, with traces of bitterness, and finishes a little watery.

I didn’t taste or smell pumpkin. It was mostly nutmeg. Not one of the better pumpkin ales but not bad either.
