Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Aroma full off spice and pumpkin. Nice thick off-white head. Orange body with mild carbonation. Pretty good pumpkin flavor. Lingering spice and hop finish. Good stuff.

I had not enjoyed the pumpkin ales that I tried before this, but something in the air prompted me to pick this one up. As soon as I opened the bottle I was intrigued. A pumpkin pie spice aroma is very prominent. I was afraid the taste would be too sweet, but it actually had the subtlety of fresh natural pumpkin. Most important, though, was the strong balance of pumpkin and hops. I couldn’t get enough of this.

Reddish orange clear body. White soapy sparse head. Decent aroma… pumpkin spice, something that seems like wet crisp hops. Taste is okay… crisp yeasty pumpkin with some faint sweet caramelly malts. Almost a bittering spicy hop presence too that dries it out a bit. At least my glass caught a fruit fly.

From a bottle purchased in Madison, WI. The body is medium orange with a white head on top. The aroma was spicy nutmeg and pumpkin with a little bit of sweet cigar tobacco. The taste had a fairly strong nutmeg presence with only hints of pumpkin in the background. There was also a little bit of toabcco. An interesting and earthy, spicy pumpkin ale.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a somewhat hazy golden brown with a thin, nearly white head that disappeared after a few sips. Pleasant aroma of pumpkin and caramel. Very little spice noted in the aroma. The irony is I found the flavor to be the exact opposite. Heavy cinnamon in the flavor and very little pumpkin. Dry, hoppy finish. A bit better than average, but still behind Weyerbacher and SPH.

Pours a hazy light amber/orange with little head. Aroma was full of pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, maybe a bit of nutmeg. Flavor was a bit weak in the pumpkin and thin in the body. I was expecting a bit more from the Smuttynose people.
