Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

I tried this at the Great Lakes Beer Fest, from the bottle. Relatively smoky for a pumpkin ale and it provided a nice touch. I could make out the spices pretty well and everything was nicely balanced. One of the better pumpkin ales out there.

Copper colored. Leaves small head (might be that my glass was dirty). Very spicey nose. Basil mostly. Also nutmeg and clubs. Taste is also spicey with loads of bitterness. Since I don’t know the taste of pumkin I can’t say it tastes like that even though it probably does. Enjoyable!

On tap in a pint glass. The aroma is all pie spices - solid nutmeg and cinnamon. The flavor is extremely bitter, almost hoppy. There is a pleasant sweetness from the pumpkin that is generally missing from other pumpkin beers. And of course the spice is there, too.

8oz: RNH: Gotham Cask Festival: pours a golden red amber, mostly clear. Nose is very spice, slightly floral, some bitters. Tastes like a delicious, spicy pumpkin pie... right on. Chewing only brings out more flavor, crisp hoppiness, deep sugars, pumpkin, cinnamon, spicy. Nice. ***bottle on 10/3: spices all over the place! Enjoyed with fresh pumpkin tortelini, what a pair! rating goes up to 3.4***

pours cloudy amber red with a thick lasting head, almost like a dark wheat. aroma is clove and pumpkin, but a weird metallic odor. flavor is more of raw pumpkin though, with some light malt and butterscotch in the background. too hop heavy in the aftertaste though, making it unbalanced. mild alcohol burn. overall, pretty disappointing.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of Jan ’10. The pour is a handsome orange-amber with a decent puffy white head and significant lacing. The aroma is not very potent but it does have a bit of pumpkin spice and crisp hops. The mouthfeel is medium. The taste has some elements of hops but little along the line of traditional pumpkin spices. Hops are evident but not strong. Overall it was not a bad experience but it seemed to be lacking something.

Hmmm this sucked. Aroma is perfume, pumpkin pie spice and some light caramel. Flavor is too hoppy and doesnt meld well with the pumpkin or spices. Odd pefumey flavor too. Not good.

Bottle from Sam’s. First of the season... which is the only reason I can think that I might have bought it, because pumpkin beers suck. This one tastes like pretty much every other decent one, which means I don’t like it very much. Sweet malt, pumpkin, and spices (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg). Hazy orange with smallish white head. Average.
