Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

[Bottle] Pours orange with a decent off-white head. Aroma is malt dominant, with a few vegetal notes, and some very faint spice. Taste has subtle spice (nutmeg and cinnamon), slight bitterness, pumpkin, and malt. Nothing surprising in the components, but it is a little heavier on the malt than expected, and more subdued overall than I had hoped for (possibly age related). Still, not bad. Fairly thin, average to below average length finish, quite smooth. This was far from my favorite pumpkin beer that I have tried, but to be fair, this isn’t a fresh bottle either. I’ll try to sample this when it is in season some time.

Bottle. Orangish-amber color with a white head. Aroma of pumpkin, spices, and malt. Flavor is sweet malt, pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Well-balanced. Smooth, fairly creamy palate for the style. A good pumpkin ale overall.

Got this brew in a mix 12 pack - not usually a big Pumpkin Ale guy but this wasn’t that bad. Pours an orangish color with a spice and pumpkin aroma... taste of pumpkin and cinnamon dominate but the pumpkin doesn’t overwhelm like some others I have had. Decent.

12oz bottle thanks to a buddy of mine for the taste.... pours a mostly transparent dull apple cider brown with a thin white head...aroma of pumpkin and nutmeg.... flavors continue along that front with a nice drinkability to it although i don’t think i would want more than one.

I love pumpkin as well and this one isnt bad. Its got some good parts, the nice aroma of fresh pumpkin, the good color, the light palate, and the fresh finish. Negatives feature the lack of a bold flavor that I really was looking for and the flat head. This beer is good, and I think most will agree, but come one Smuttynose, you got me, now rope me in. Worth a try to tell your snobby friends.

I dig pumpkin ales from time to time and I think I could dig this particular one from time to time. This one is definitely spiced but has a little bit more of that real pumpkin than others. Sweet at first but finishes dry. Cinnamon.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is pumpkin sweet and quite spiced. Light bodied. Sweet vegetable, malty and solid coriander and ginger spiced flavoured. Holds mild bitterness and dry pumpkin finish. Fine brew - just not my thing.

12 oz, bb Feb 09. Clear orange-copper with a lasting quarter inch of cream above. Nose is spicy nutmeg, cinnamon, leafy hop and squash. Flavor is spicy molasses, orange, grain, cinnamon, clove and tea leaf. Later some ginger and flowery hop shows up. Medium body is fairly smooth and finishes slightly dry.
