Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America's brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Appearance: Pours a clear, orangey body with a small, off-white head. A nice pumpkiny hue! Smell: Sweetish, cakey, pumpkin aroma. Some slight squashy, vegetal notes. Plenty of pumpkin pie spice blend in the nose. Taste: Spicy-sweet, tangy pumpkin flavor. A bite of pound cake. Mild hop bitterness. Cumulative spiciness. Dash of vanilla-flavored sugar on the pumpkiny finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A fine pumpkin. It definitely doesn’t delve into the territory of imperialized pumpkin ales, but it still pleasant and plenty tasty.

12 oz bottle, pours a transparent rusy golden color. Aroma is very pleasant, of pumpkin and spice, also sweet with mild malty and hoppy characteristics. Taste reflected the spicy aroma, and feels kind of cool on the palate. Smooth going down with no aftertaste. Good option.

Golden color with a medium head. Aroma of light pumpkin, lots of malt. Flavor is light pumpkin, spice, rather mild. OK, but only average in a sub-par style.

On tap at the Beechtree. Wonderful pumpkin pie aroma with hints of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The big aroma peters out a little bit in the mouth as the promises of pumpkin fall a little short in the flavor category, but the ale itself is still rather tasty.

Bottle: Pours a hazy orange with a wispy off white head. The aroma is sofly sweet, along with toasted pale malt undertones- has a touch of crystal as well. Sweet squash, vanilla, clove and cinnamon are all there, but minimal. Mildly spicy. Has a velvety feel, with evident toasted pale malt upfront which precedes mild cinnamon and clove in the middle, followed with a toasted, peppery finish. Not much pumpkin character comes through, and the spices are there, yet remains homogeneous and predominately peppery. Still, it’s not bad.

pours deep golden-orange with fluffy white head. aroma of freshly-baked pumpkin pie (or pie filler) with a light fruity note and spice. Flavor is heavy spice, pumpkin, roasted malt, and a slight floral bitterness to finish it up.maybe some caramel apple as well. Aftertaste is spice and floral hops with slight malt. medium carbonation, slightly oily, soft, viscous, creamy. pretty good and highly drinkable!
