Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

Pours a rich mahogany with a large tan head and good lacing. Aroma of dark fruits and malts. Complex and deep flavors of sweet fruit, roasted malts, alcohol, and some toffee. This is a very good beer.

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark brown chocolate pour with a puffy tan head. Aroma is rich and earthy with hints of malts, caramel, toffee, dates, and cherries. Some chocolate as well. Flavor is dark and earthy as well with some nutty hints mixed with chocolate, toffee, and dark fruits. Blends well and lingers on the tongue for quite a while. Very delicious.

2008 Bottle. Pours a deep dark caramel color body with a thin, tight toupe colored head that dissipated rather quickly. Scents of booze overwhelm the senses but a nice variety of roasted nuts, toffee and a faint dash of vinegar complete the unique smell. Just as the booze overpowers the smell, it announces its presence with authority in the first sip. A lovely light malt profile breaks through next with some rich toffee and dark fruit. Dried cherries, dates and salted raisens come to mind. The body has a very silky feel on the tongue and despite the smell and flavor there is very little alcohol soak. There is something about this beer, like a sour funky backbone that is really beautifully hidden that makes it intriguing.

Thanks to decaturstevo for sharing this one. Starts with a tall off-white head over a clear dark brown body. Malty alcohol aroma. Nutty sweet with a touch of bitterness from the hops for balance. Decent beer.

2007 Bottle shared by decaturstevo. Poured brown with an off-white head that left good lace. A little iced tea aroma at first but settles out to milk chocolate, nut, and a slight hop background. The flavor has caramel, brown sugar, and a hint of fruits. Medium body. Enjoyable!

Caramel, toasted malts and a slight smokiness come through in the aroma. Orange-brown color beneath a thin head. Flavor is full of toasty and nutty malts. A light hop presence balances the malts with some cocoa flavors in the finish. Thanks rudy.

[1353-20080517] 1pt6floz bottle. Heavy fruity yeast aroma with Belgian yeast malt. Slightly hazy, bright red amber body with a creamy off-white head. Smoky yeast flavour has thick sweet malt. Full body has a smoky grains feel. Interesting big beer.
