dlovell2 (110), Columbia, Maryland, USA Aug 26, 2008 Dark brown with coffee colored head. Roasted malt and hops aroma. Roasted malt with brown sugar taste and hops finish. Very rich and flavorful. Schultsc (407), Henderson, Nevada, USA Aug 25, 2008 Pours a very dark, nearly opaque chestnut brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is primarily of roasted grain with a bitter caramel edge and a hint of coffee. Flavor is well-focused in a relatively narrow flavor profile for a beer of this heft--the roasted flavors are close to one another without any wild tangents of say molasses, strong chocolate, or fruit--it is a study of coffee and caramel notes with good bitterness and some hops. Pleasantly light mouth feel for the style as well that enhances the delicate flavors. GAManiac (293), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 22, 2008 Pours dark, dark brown with only the slightest hint of light penetrating around the edges. The tan head is dense and shows very good retention and lacing. Aroma has big roasted malts with significant chocolate and coffee whiffs as well. There is also a little bit of hops in the nose as well. The taste is mostly roasted malts and coffee with some dark fruits and a bit of milk chocolate. Mouthfeel is creamy with tons of carbonation that accentuates the coffee bitterness a little bit. This is a great porter and yet another solid brew from Smuttynose. madsmikkelsen (3), willow grove, Pennsylvania, USA does not count Aug 20, 2008 This beer is much better than I remember from first trying it several years ago. Very dark color. Smells like chocolate with just a hint of coffee. Luscious mouthfeel. Really good for a moderate porter. ElGaucho56 (379), USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours a pretty opaque black with a tan ring for a head and some spotty lacing. Nice molasses and baker’s chocolate nose, decent body for a lower alcohol beer, finishes with a pleasant herbal bitterness with a touch of coffee roasted character. Quite a decent midrange porter.
