Pours oily black, with mahogany/mocha head.
Aroma of strong dark fruits, chocolate and malts.
Taste simply loaded with chocolate, roasted malts, full body, light bitter hops, robust at best and could easily pass for more than 5.7%. BustedFlat (554), Edina, Minnesota, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 29, 2009 [Bottle] Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is very nice at first, with lots of chocolate, and very faint notes of dark fruits and smoke. As it warms, it gradually changes, taking on a more burned popcorn character that is not nearly as appealing and really quite astoundingly different from the initial smell. The taste has a fair amount of chocolate, but it is largely dominated by the charred malt that came out in the aroma. It isn’t bad, but it makes it a little one dimensional. Medium mouthfeel with a long finish. Overall this was an interesting beer that I am glad I had a whole bottle of to drink. The aroma is so jekyll and hyde that had I rated this at a festival, or at a tasting, I would have most likely missed out on one of the phases that it goes through. If the charred malt were toned down just a bit I would really like this beer. DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 27, 2009 Draft at Redlight Redlight. Pours a really dark mahogany brown color with a chestnut edge. A foamy, tan head settles quickly, leaving delicate splotches of lace behind. The nose is very roasty and smooth, with bold notes of dark milk chocolate, burnt caramel, deeply roasted barley, and espresso. Flavors follow suit, with rich, dry, dark cocoa and scorched caramel dominating. Bitter, earthy hops and black coffee linger well after the finish. Medium-full and dry roasted, the mouthfeel is substantial, but suffers from over-carbonation and a hint of chalkiness. If not for the palate flaws, this would be a killer porter. As it stands, it is still pretty damn good.
