Aroma is primarily of roasted grain with a bitter caramel edge and a hint of coffee. Flavor is well-focused in a relatively narrow flavor profile for a beer of this heft--the roasted flavors are close to one another without any wild tangents of say molasses, strong chocolate, or fruit--it is a study of coffee and caramel notes with good bitterness and some hops. Pleasantly light mouth feel for the style as well that enhances the delicate flavors. GAManiac (1176), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 22, 2008 Pours dark, dark brown with only the slightest hint of light penetrating around the edges. The tan head is dense and shows very good retention and lacing. Aroma has big roasted malts with significant chocolate and coffee whiffs as well. There is also a little bit of hops in the nose as well. The taste is mostly roasted malts and coffee with some dark fruits and a bit of milk chocolate. Mouthfeel is creamy with tons of carbonation that accentuates the coffee bitterness a little bit. This is a great porter and yet another solid brew from Smuttynose. madsmikkelsen (3), willow grove, Pennsylvania, USA does not count | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 20, 2008 This beer is much better than I remember from first trying it several years ago. Very dark color. Smells like chocolate with just a hint of coffee. Luscious mouthfeel. Really good for a moderate porter. ElGaucho56 (393), USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 18, 2008 Pours a pretty opaque black with a tan ring for a head and some spotty lacing. Nice molasses and baker’s chocolate nose, decent body for a lower alcohol beer, finishes with a pleasant herbal bitterness with a touch of coffee roasted character. Quite a decent midrange porter. jeckenroth (81), Charlestown, Massachusetts, USA

Very dark brown (almost black). Latte like head was moderate but almost laceless.
The first smell was hops and a somewhat forresty feel.
The chocolate and malt hit at the same time. Full flavored over a nice texture. Thick, and a somewhat lively carbonation. Coffee flavor finished the drink to a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Much better than I expected. The influence of darker stouts without being too overpowering made this a nice glass. maugus4ever (121), Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA

Has a nice balance of hops and malts. Nice roasty and bitter finish. Underhook (162), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 5/5 | 12/20 | Aug 17, 2008 Toasted, coffee aroma. Thick, bubbly, brown head, lots of lacing. Woody, toasted, coffee taste. Palate resembles drinking warm whipped cream, fantastic, but purely a winter beer. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2008 (Bottle). Aroma of dark chocolate and coffee. Deep dark brown, with a thin brown head. Roasty flavor, with a bit too much tobacco. LOVE the bottle label!
