| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 6, 2007 A miniature black hole in a bottle. Shine a flashlight through and you see a dark crimson color. A cute light-brown head adorns the black hole. Smell was detectable as soon as the cap came off: chocolate, malt, and... nuts? Flavor is very very nice. Heavily roasted and "deep". No astringency throughout the entire glass; all smooth melted cocoa beans. With other porters I’ve had, there’s always something funky with the taste, but sip after sip was yumyum. Changed my mind about porters. Touche (57), New York, USA

Smooth flavor of chocolate malt and malty bitternes that almost feels like a weak stout. Nice seeet and smooth finish cool black look with a head that stays. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 16, 2007 Pours cola-black with the slightest of ruby hues... almost opaque. The head is large and sudsy, deep tan, and sticks with frothy lacing to the glass. Roasts, alcohol, dark fruit, malt, chocolate, coffee, tobacco and toffee in the nose. Flavor is a bit strong here. I get roasted barley, bitter chocolate, tobacco, hops, coffee and dark cherries. The finish is spot on for a dark chocolate truffle. The mouthfeel is slick and buttery, with a proper amount of cream and bite. This one is pungent to the palate and quite complex. theisti (1666), Leawood, Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 14, 2007 12 oz. bottle from beastiefan2k. Pour is a deep reddish brown with a medium khaki head and a slight bit of lacing / settling. Aroma is sweet roasted malt, quite strong could actually pick it up from about 12 inches away. Beginning is the roasted malt, though much more coffee in it than the nose would suggest. About halfway through there is a quick blast of sour, than a bit of sweetness, and back to a very nice roasty finish. Wow, what a tour of taste! Even some hop highlights. The finish is very dry, almost like an aged whisky. Overall, a very good beer. Thanks again Eugene, this was a treat. ChainGangGuy (2568), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 7, 2007 Appearance: Dark brown, nearly black, with a dense, foamy mocha-colored head which slowly settled over the next few minutes.
Smell: Malty with currents of sweet chocolate and roasted coffee beans running throughout. Faint fruity scent, as well.
Taste: Like a demitasse of espresso served with a small square of chocolate melted within. Caramel. Grains. Hops are piney and they blend quite well with the other flavors. A touch sour. Lingering dry roasty finish.
Will you people please just relax for two seconds? All the rich flavors will come together perfectly, trust me.
Mmm. There. Delish!
Mouthfeel: Nice and creamy. Just a hair above medium in body (medium-plus?). Carbonation remains light.
Drinkability: The first and only porter claiming to be "robust" that really delivered for me. I’m positively nonplussed with amazement. But also saddened by the fact that I can’t regularly get this in Georgia. Plenty of flavor, well-balanced, and extreme drinkability make this an outstanding brew.
Other porters beware! Cuz there’s a new sherriff a-comin’. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 3, 2007 5/11/2007: Smuttynose Robust Porter pours a clear, very dark brown color (near black really). The initial foamy brown head gives way to a lasting foamy crown after it slowly collapses down. The aroma is rich and malty and contains chocolate malt, mocha cream, and a deep, smooth alcohol presence. Very inviting! The flavor is rish, robust, and complex, but controlled and not overwhelming. At first the flavor is slightly sweet. Bittersweet chocolate, hints of coffee and cream, and a dark chocolate bitterness arose the tastebuds. Ther eis a deep, soft fruity quality as well as hints of well-integrated alcohol that run throughout the flavor as well. The overall bitterness is balanced and has a blend of semi-sweet and dark chocolate flavor to it. The finish is lengthy and roasty. All of this flavor is contained within the medium-full body of this beer. The palate is smooth and creamy. Smuttynose Robust Porter is a great representation of a robust porter!
12 oz bottle (5.7% Alcohol By Volume) via trade with illinismitty in December 2006. Thanks for picking up a bottle of this beer for me during your travels last year. I appreciate it!
