Excellent smell of malt, caramel and chocolate. Nice smooth finish and a wonderful beer to drink, even when it’s not cool outside. DarkMagus (433), San Jose, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 8, 2006 Poured a dark black with ruby highlights. Creamy, frothy head which dissapated fairly rapidly but left behind some gentle lacing on the glass and on the surface of the brew. Deep malty, roasted grain aroma. Flavors similar to aroma: roasted grains, malt, wheat, a hint of nuttiness, and a mild hoppiness. A real "serious" porter...Smuttynose always pulls through with excellent brews. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 25, 2006 Wonderful brew. Dark black body with a small tan-colored head. Aroma was not complex, but gave hints of a wonderfully roasty and malty experience. Taste was very malty and rich. Burnt notes, strong flavoring and a small hoppy twang in the finish. As it warmed, there were some earthy notes to it. Very unique, and definitely the break-out porter that I was looking for on the particular day. This one will stay in regular rotation in my refrigerator, especially in the winter. JoeMcPhee (5010), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 14, 2006 Tap at Hop Devil Grill. Black beer with a thin off-white head. Aroma is quite simple, black malt, herbal hoppiness as well as some dark caramel. Low chocolate character, but a very prominent anise/licorice aroma. Flavour is very herbal, licorice, toast and a lingering earthy hoppiness. Light roast, but the earthy and herbal notes drive the show here. Tasty and quite distinctive. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA
