Noticeable malt presence with some almost burnt leaves there as well. Sweet tones lie in the back. Flavor is super peat! It’s just like peat all up in my mouth *makes motions with fingers in front of mouth*. In no way is it overdone. Full and consistent. Feel is full with carbonation and well bodied on the liquid. Nice to drink. A bit too much going on here to go far beyond large sips. But it’s still pretty darn good. mwelsh13 (483), Maryland, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 4, 2008 22oz bottle poured a deep brown and ruby color with an off white head that dissipates to a ring around the glass. Aroma is nothing but a sweet smell and a whole lot of smoke. Toffee, caramel, and a light coffee flavor dominate the taste. There is smoke flavor is very aggressive. The closest thing I put my finger on for the smoke is sitting by a campfire and tasting the smoke. Mouthfeel leave a stickiness in my mouth. Not bad, but a bit much on the smoke in my opinion. Flavor semi-sweet, metallic, tar, brown sugar, molasses, caramel. Smokey peat in brewer’s description is quite noticeable. Finishes slightly sour. Mouth feel is liqueur-like. adrian910ss (1429), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 30, 2008 22 oz bomber. Pours a dark muddy amber caramel with a medium bubble laced beige head. Aroma of malt, burnt sugar, beef jerky and smoke. Taste of beef jerky, malt and liquid smoke. A bit of a letdown from Smuttynose. MrBendo (1043), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA

Aroma practically screams PEAT; big, smoky peat with bready malts and earth. Dry and smoky taste. Incredibly dry compared to most other Scotch’s. pantanap (1358), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 26, 2008 bottle thanks to andrew.....pours a semi-transparent amber brown with a frothy white head....nose was made up of malts and dark fruit. no peaty smoke for me as far as the nose is concerned....flavor consisted of a lot of sweet malt with some hoppy bitterness/spiciness in the finish. the sweetness takes over the bitterness as the beer warms and some smoke comes into play a little bit more. tunneler (113), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 24, 2008 was fairly unimpressed here, i didn’t get much of the peat smoke some people have noticed. A bit too sweet and generally ho-hum. perhaps a bad bottle?

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 24, 2008 22 oz bottle - pours a ruddy amber light bubbly foam. Aroma of wet leather and peat smoke. Flavor initially hints at sweet malt with a wisp of caramel/toffee that gets steamrolled by the peat smoke, peat and more peat. As the beer warms, some of the peat smoke subsides but still remains a dominant flavor. Mouthfeel is spot on, medium/medium heavy palate.
