Fresh citrus and floral hops. Fruity malts plus an interesting musty quality. Hoppy, dry flavor. A solid pale ale that strikes me as more American than English in style, but that’s academic. rhapsouldize (174), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA

Sweet, fruity aroma....maybe along the lines of apricots? Well-balanced....maltier than most pale ales. Medium-bodied. Overall, yummy. crzybob77 (528), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 6, 2004 Smuttynose has always been reliable for me. Hops are somewhat light, but enough to keep it interesting. It balances well with the malt sweetness. A quite enjoyable session beer. JPDIPSO (4932), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 19, 2004 Dark amber with a taller off white head. Earthy/woody malt aromas along with some mild fruit. Flavors of cocoa, light oak and peat. Mild herbal bitterness. A nice change of pace from the resent onslaught of IPAs, APAs and general over hopped brews. Thanks to Falconeye8 for this brew. motelpogo (4395), Plzen, Czech Republic

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 6, 2004 New Holland had tons of head, Smuttynose didn’t have as much. Thats ok because Smuttynose is a different style but nonetheless a very very good beer. I’ve had two of this line previously and both were outstanding. This is no exception. Of the English Style this is the 2nd best EPA I’ve had to date. joeycapps (1466), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada

Earthy flavour of malty (caramel, brown sugar, chocolate?), fruit (orange) & wood. Some diacetyl present jasonp (1513), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA

However, it is a very satisfying English-style Pale Ale. Aroma is malty. Taste is mildly bitter with a solid amount of hops, caramel malt and some citrus. Mouthfeel is fantastic; full, round and very creamy. Extremely solid brew. Recommended.
