Commercial Description:
Copper-colored ale is medium-bodied and highly hopped. Its flavor is delightfully complex: tangy fruit at the start, with an assertive hop crispness and a long malty palate that one well-known beer writer has compared to the flavor of freshly-baked bread.

A: Poured with an average-sized, off-white head... diminished after a couple of minutes to a thin film. Body is a dark golden color, and hazy. S: Mmmm... APA goodness. Smells quite hoppy, with a little sweetness in there as well. I think I may detect some lemon/lime also. T: Oh yeah, that’s some good APA. Starts off lightly sweet and citrusy, and finishes slightly bitter. Not as bitter as I would have expected from the aroma... an excellent balance as it isn’t overwhelming, yet provides a bit of everything, with a good duration. M: Awesome on the palate as well. Medium-bodied and creamy, it rolls across the tongue perfectly. Average carbonation... just right. D: A great APA; very easy to drink... this is a beer I could drink at the beginning or end of the night, and several of them. Quite floral, and very satisfying. My first Smuttynose beer, and I’m looking forward to more in the near future (hopefully).

12oz bottle from ABC Liquor. Copper pour with thin off-white head and a light sheet of sudsy stick. Citrus hop aroma with a yeasty quality to it. Grassy hop bitterness in the taste balanced by an earthy malt sweetness. Slightly watery palate and low carbonation keep the focus on the bitterness through to the dry finish.

Hoppy and citrusy more like an IPA to me which is probably why I like it so much. Although maybe all english pale ale’s are similar. Very refreshing and tasty

(12 ounce bottle) Smuttynose has a good looking bottle. Pours a dense but small head, has great head retention though which leads to a nice lacing. Hoppy aroma with notes of pepper and citrus. Crisp hoppy taste. Carbonation is there though not at all overpowering, light crisp finish. 5% ABV makes this a good session beer.

12oz bottle. Pours a hazy copper color with a fine head of white foam that leaves a good amount of lace. Grain and malty sweetness and a touch of floral hops make the aroma. Great flavor balance goes from a citrus hop flavor to full sweet maltiness and finishes with a drying hop bitterness. A decent Smutty.

a nice pale ale, however, the problem with pale ales in general for an IPA drinker is a lack of overall taste and flavor or body. this is a good example of that. nice refreshing PA taste and crisp palate, but it leaves you wanting more body.

This one poured a nice copper color with a white head. Aroma was slightly grassy, a bit sweet and some herbal and citrus musty hops too. Flavor was light crisp pale ale, nice balance if slightly bitter hops and pale malt.

12oz bottle. Your basic pale ale here. Very drinkable, nice caramel taste with just enough hops. Very well done though nothing out of the ordinary for this style.

Bottle. Has the color of a tarnished penny and supports a dense but small head. Aromas of caramel and peppery spices with a little bit of citrus. Flavor has quite a bit of caramel and bready malt with lots of spice and bitter grassiness in the finish. Pretty decent stuff.
