Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 5/4/09

Aroma: Citrus, yeast, spices, sweet fruits, earth
Appearance: Hazy copper color, medium off-white head
Flavor: A decent balance: spice sweetness, malts, and a touch of hop bitterness
Palate: Light, drinkable
Overall Impression: Kind of like a spiced up version of a standard Belgian Blonde. A nice adjustment to a style I don’t usually like all that much, but this one works decently well.

Pours a soft peachy amber with a thin frothy offwhite head. The nose is earthy, some funky, yeasty, sweet, mildly spicy, some corn. Flavor is yeasty and earthy, crisp, some corn, spices show up but are indistinguishable. Crisp, easy to drink. Nice for sessioning.

Hazy gold pour with a white head and spotty lace. Corn aroma. Thin bodied with notable hints of candi sugar, corn and yeast

Classic Belgian ale aroma. Flavor is light with subtle spice in the background. Very easy drinking. Lighter, sessionable Belgian styles don’t get alot of props around here; kudos to Smuttynose for making one that works.

On tap at Raleigh WBF. Thought this was a single hop or single malt but apparently is an Abbey Single....strange. Pours a cloudy bright yellow with a thin white cap not unlike a pale lager. Nose is lemongrass, yeast, white sugar. Taste is light-bodied, refreshing with lemon peel, honeydew melon, grassy hops. Not very impressive especially considering the brewery’s other stellar offerings.

Tasted at World Beer Festival in Raleigh NC. I am a big Smuttynose fan but I was suprised this was a Belgian Ale - didn’t really come across that way for me - was much more a mild blonde ale to me - in that realm I would have rated it higher but as a Belgian this one getter mediocre marks.

Bottle... Poured an unfiltered orange with a thin white head. Citrus spices and other fruity, yeasty ester on the nose. A lot of ester and spiced flavors up front with some grainy characters in the end. A little bitterness from maybe hops.

Draft at Coles in Buffalo. Pours gold with a white head. Malty aroma, some fruity sweetness. Balanced flavor, with grainy sweet malt and grassy floral hops. Decent, but very unremarkable.
