Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Winter Ale is a full-bodied, amber beer brewed with a special Trappist ale yeast. Stylistically reminiscent of a Belgian Abbey Double, it features fruity aromas and flavor, balanced by soft Crystal hops. Warming, mellow & pleasantly complex, Smuttynose Winter Ale is your perfect cold weather companion. New in 2005! Available in sixpacks and on draft from late October through January.

The Lure:
Roasted malts sparsely coating the fig fruitiness. Some alcohol peeks through the scant foam and lacing.

The Festivities:
A comforting, round mouthfeel offers up cherries and dates on a delicate plate of residual sweetness. Mild roasted maltiness turns into bitter suggestions. Some alcohol roams haphazardly, as does Belgian yeast powder. Sweet and fruity, a filling and satisfying dubbel.

Transcendence:
A fluffy cushion to lean on.

Aroma: Sweet malts, fruity esters, but faint. Appearance: Deep brown pour, little head, no lace. Flavor: Fruits and sweet malts: raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar, caramel, a little citrus. Not at all hop forward, just slightly bitter in the finish. Palate: Very mellow and slightly warming, only a little carbonation and the very beginning.

12oz bottle. Pours dark reddish brown with thin tad head. Aroma is roasted malts, caramels, toffee, raisons and spices. Flavor is a tad thin with toffee, raisons, sweet malt, and brown sugar. Medium carbonation. Have not had a ton of this style but this is a pretty solid brew and reminds me of a nice raosted brown ale.

Dark amber pour thin tan head and some spotty lace. Roast aroma almost smokey. Oxidized flavor

This beer pours a clear, dark copper colour. A small thin tan head, with a firm mouthfeel. It has hints of smoke and black licorice. Aromas of caramel, toffee, oak and cinnamon. Fairly smooth, but a little weak in its style representation.

Tap at Blind Tiger: Perhaps it was because it was oxidized, or I drank this stuff on a 90 degree day, but I wasn’t feeling it at all. Deep amber pour with no head. Sweet estery aroma. Maple, lots of raisin sweetness and a hint of clove-spice. Fizzy body. Sweet flavor with a harsh clove-like presence and tons of sweet raisiny flavors, followed by more ashy-clove in the oddly-spicy finish. Has an odd/dirty flavor which left an bad taste in my mouth.
