BückDich (4540), Boise, Idaho, USA Jun 12, 2007 Bottle: Dark brown, licorice like color, light head and lacing. Nose of nuts, cocoa, skin and a bit much of diacetyl. Flavor of some creamy chocolate and sharp astringent roast, some light nutella notes. The finish is a bit sticky and dry, lots of astringency, decent though for a robust porter. hopscotch (4485), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 26, 2007 Bottle… Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. Good retention. The nose is a swirl of chocolate, diacetyl, guava, avocado and smoke. The flavor is reminiscent of smoked beef jerky… a touch salty and mildly sweet. Light to medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Watery, sweet, acrid finish. Not bad. Good, in fact, but a bit thin. My sample was courtesy of boboski. Thanks Jason! MartinT (4330), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Oct 8, 2006 Any first impressions?
-A sheet of foam rests atop the brownish black.
-Potent roastiness emerges from pungent vinosity, for an alluring and unsettling aroma.
-Talkative molasses and boastful roastiness stave off the fruity sourness.
-The soft, large bubbling reminds that of their IPA.
What if you dig deeper?
-Roastiness claims the finish, which was predictable due to its raw strength in this beer.
-A meaty, red wine vinegar tinge gives its personality, but I’m not sure it’s supposed to be there.
-Dark chocolate links the brash roastiness to the molasses’ sweetness.
-As Joris says, this is a severe porter, but it is a pleasure to tame it.
Bottle; no date. acrdz (4302), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jun 16, 2005 Deep brown body with a moderatley dark brown head, the color of wheat bread. Dusty, airy nose of charred coffee and malts and some semi-sweet wood notes. Crisp and biting smoky wood flavor up front, turning to cold coffee flavors and smoke over the middle into a dusty and parched finish, accented by a strong charred campfire wood finish. Tastes very similar to Rogue Mocha Porter. JorisPPattyn (4282), Antwerpen, Belgium Apr 21, 2006 Draught Black beer with a yellow head, small. Licorice, ink, black mushrooms, and dark malts (surprise, surprise). Generally bit sweet nose. Dry, dark, burnt grains taste - severe but honest. Dry, slight burning MF. Good porter. The dryness and profile are right on spot, congrats.
