Taste is very nice. I’ve only had german ALT beer in bottles so I can’t compare it to the actual german brew houses.
In its fresh draft form the flavors are very great for a dark beer. Light alcohol dark beer with complexity is what the craft beer market should nail and this beer does it...
Low IBU makes the smoked malt and toasted malts more approachable. Often times hop head brewers take hopping too the extreme and subdue the art of the maltster.
Overall I think this should be a regular rotating beer and gain more refinement. Of all the beer I’ve had from this place this one really shines as an honest try for German purity. iowaherkeye (1856), Los Angeles, California, USA

Roasty malts up front with a little bit of smoky malts and a hint of earthy hops. The flavor continues with the roast dominating with some chocolate malts and some minerals. Bitterness at a 3 in the dry finish. Light to moderate carbonation with a light to medium body. Not like any alt that I’ve had, but the brewer said he was going for chocolatey, roasty, and a little dry. That’s exactly what this is.
