Commercial Description:
Our only named beer to date. Its' honorary status is in tribute to its' designer, Allen Rhoades, a fellow brewer who captured a blue ribbon at the Western Washington State Fair when it was entered as a homebrew. It's everything a stout should be. Rich and hearty, not thick and overpowering, comes complete with a creamy head. Chocolate and crystal malts along with roasted barley combine to create the wonderful flavor. Compliments deserts well: try one in place of a cup of coffee.

I was completely wondering what was up with the spelling, as clearly it is "Rhodes Scholars" not "Rhoades". But I got to Ratebeer and all is explained. Dark brown with hints of yellow at the edges. A hint of grape in the aroma before it explodes in richness of flavor, deeply roasted, nutty too, and an unfortunate suggestion of metallic.

Deep garnet colored. Head was thin and khaki. Ashy nose. Good- excellent mouthfeel. Some good chocolate notes with some java notes in there.

Clear very dark brown. Roasted cocoa dominance, but slightly phenolic at the same time and surprisingly sulfury in mouth, which was certainly unexpected from a stout. Simplistic cigary and oaky palate, rather dry, heavily roasty.

OPaque body with a very thin film of bubbles. Nose is bittersweet chocolate and some smoke. Taste-WOW! Notes of honey, coffee, chocolate, burnt marshmallow, coffee, cola, and grape come through. A little too sweet, but very nicely done.

(12oz bottle) Black body topped by enormous tan head that leaves no lacing as it shrinks back to manageable size. Aroma is moderately sweet, dark chocolate, molasses, some prune, roasty, coffee. Taste is moderately sweet, chocolate, prune, light roast, medicinal. Medium body with a bit of chalk.

Bottle thanks to my Secret Santa. Pour is a nice rich black with a good creamy head. Aroma comes off rather simple, its got some chocolate and some coffee, but neither ones are big. Flavor is pretty good, comes off with sweeter chocolate and then dries up with a chalky mouthfeel. Pretty tastey of a brew, the dryness is a nice aspect.
