Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Jul 2, 2009 On draught at the Deepwater/South Shore brewpub in downtown Ashland, WI. Pours a clear dark cola brown colored brew with a thin white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring and no film top. Aroma of crystal golden grain malt, a hint of banana/clove, toasted dark wheat and honey. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation, with flavors of toasted dark malt, banana, wheat malt, some brown sugar, alcohol and mild spice. Finish has a slight alcohol warmth with a lingering mild bitters and an aftertaste of toasted dark malt, banana and some chocolate. Alcohol ABV has to be somewhere from 6 to 6.5%. JohnnyOS (646), Golden, Wisconsin, USA Jan 20, 2008 Pours dark brown with orangish highlights. Aroma of spice banana and brown sugar/molasses. Aroma was of clove, a hint of banana, light alcohol, and brown sugar. Roasty and lightly acidic on the tongue with notes of toasted bread, tangy banana, and honey touched cereal grain. Pretty good. jewedekind (450), Middleton, Wisconsin, USA Apr 26, 2005 On tap at brewery. The bartender said this was the Weizen Stout Dopplebock. DOn’t know if this is the same beer, but I imagine he was wrong, but it WAS stout-like. Weak aroma of chocolate and banana. Light brown head that left some lace. constantly refreshed by active carbonation. Roasted chocolate and banana with some oak notes. Slightly bitter from the roasted malts, butvery good overall. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA Apr 12, 2005 Brown Coloring with Dusty Head. Strong Malt Aroma. Light Wheat Notes as well. Pretty Complex Brew But Quite Enjoyable. Roasts, Prunes, Thick Mouthfeel, Then the Wheat Hits You Hard. Malty Sweet and Very Tasty. Worth Trying to Find. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Apr 10, 2005 On-tap at Gitchee Gumee Brewfest - Dark cola brown with a thin cocoa colored cap, spotty minimal lacing.
Aroma is heavy and dark of roasted barley malt, bits of tangy molasses, and an even more darker sweetness of wheat.
Dark roasty flavors throughout, light smokey nuances, almost peet-like earthyness, lighter molasses decorates the rest. Sweet, dark and crisp wheatness, and pruney with a trailing off finish thats complexly built with some dark cherry and dates mixing with heavy leftover roasty things sprinkling some coffee dryness and dusted cocoa. Solid finishing characteristics. Really pulls together nicely at the end.
Feel is a bit short of most Dopples, has a decent medium body overall, sweet, roasty, kinda tangy, lightly creamy with more carbonation then I’d like to see, its a bit unsmooth in some areas but continued to hold its own as it warmed. Overall - its a pretty solid dopple and was close to getting better numbers but just needed a little extra ompff in the beginning and some thicker creamyness. But it’s another beer from South Shore to look forward to. CharlesDarwin (1823), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA Apr 9, 2005 Gitchee Gumee Brewfest 2005. A nice even hazy brown pour. An almost herbaceous minty aroma that is relaxing. There is strong wheat in the flavor, backed with that sugary bock burnt toast note. What a great combo! Much like a good weizen-bock (may be). This beer has got a good mix of flavors that is pleasent and appealing. A very smooth and crisp finish!
