Well, it’s actually the second indicator, the first being a huge, frothy off-white head atop an amber-red body. The nose was very sweet — brown sugar, molasses, caramel with hints of fruits. The flavor, too, is very sweet, but a lasting bitterness comes through in the finish. The alcohol at the end is slightly liquor like. Creamy texture and lively carbonation. Medium to full body. Low acidity. Excellent. SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA

Fantastic nose of melted caramel, toffee, peanut brittle, almonds and a whisp of alcohol. Creamy, expansive mouthfeel. The malt onslaught is even further developed in the body, more caramel, butterscotch, vanilla and a touch of cocoa. A strong molasses note lingers as well. Finishes full and really warms the stomach. Good God, I hope we have another bottle of this in the cellar for Xmas this year! beerguy101 (3969), Newark, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 20, 2007 This old ale pours a medium amber color from a 750ml bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is caramel and malty, touch of sweetness. Medium bodied old ale. Malts are caramel and sweet. Hops are earthy. Nice balance. Touch of alcohol. Good carbonation. Would be a good winter sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. jefcon (1009), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 16/20 | Jun 20, 2007 Strong aromas of medium caramel and cane sugar. Raisin and molasses. Stupendous head on a deep brown, opaque body. Really sweet and syrupy flavor profile, ends in some charcoal and cherry. I love the flavors but am not such a fan of the sweetness, so I am rewarding the Flavor and subtracting from Palate. A unique old ale that holds on to much of its character. theisti (1689), Leawood, Kansas, USA

Limited to no head with some small khaki hugging to the edge of the wine glass. Taste is malty, of bit of raisiness and earthiness. Lingering after taste of bitter sweetness. alexanderj (2280), Chino Hills, California, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 16, 2007 A dark brown color with a beige head. A nutty, raisin, chocolate, and alcohol aroma. The flavor is quite sweet with some brown sugar, molasses, dark fruit, and chocolate. This one is rather carbonated with a nice warming effect. This would be even better in the winter. creamy with molasses in the nose and flavor, this is a rich brew that’s pretty tasty.
