apple juice in bulk. Believed to be 2006 bottle, Atlanta Ale meeting. I will give this another shot as this may be tainted.

Courtesy of Pailhead. July ’06. Transparent mahogany brown, minimal white head. Aroma is full of yeasty sourness, hints of leather and cardboard. Flavor much the same. Probably has seen its better days. Decent for a sour mash or something but not a dubbel at all.

Thanks to hopdog for popping open this bottle of one of my favorite styles from one of my favorite breweries... Appears a dark mahogany with a red hue and an off white head that slowly fades into a small cap. Mild spots of lacing are left around the glass. Smell is of roasted nuts, cocoa, light tartness, caramel, vanilla, chalk dust, and dirty ash trays with sugar dumped in them. Taste is of the mentioned aromas with some caramel, grapes and a bit of cream. Mouthfeel is of dry chalkiness with tartness and mild astringency. Seemed a bit off. As a fan of the both Southampton, and Dubbels, I expected to be blown away.

750ml bottle acquired in trade with EDA (thanks!). Poured a dark brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of earth, yeast, some dark fruits, and cork. Very different aroma profile for a dubbel. Taastes of sour and tart cherries, dark fruits, nutty and light caramel.

Poured a hazy orange color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma was musty, toffee malts, caramel, some cardboard, with wood, cork, raisins, and tobacco. Taste was a bit tart, with grapes, nuts, sweet caramel malts, and a lightly tart finish.

Bottle: Courtesy of Eyedrinkale via trade. Big yeasty aroma with moderate leather and a hint of grain. Pours a hazy brownish-orange with a small off-white head. Yeasty up front with an out of place sour finish. Light fruit in the middle. Somewhat oxidized. Has few Dubbel characteristics. If I rated to style as opposed to personal taste, this would score much lower.

Provided by Pailhead: Coppery hue with a nice frothy head and okay lace. The aroma was a bit chocking with a sour cherry component along with leather, earthy yeast, clove, coriander and biscuit. The taste followed suit with a acidic sourness along with a soft grainy undertone. This beer shows very little dubbel qualities and makes me question the condition of the bottle. Additionally, I found the feel far too thin and fizzy. Will try a re-rate if the opportunity presents itself but for now a major disappointment.

04.29.06 TAPNY Having rushed to the Southampton booth, knowing that they tend to only bring a few bottles of the high demand stuff, and finding that they didn indeed have their 10th anniversary but it wasn’t ready to drink, I reluctantly submitted to a large pour of this beer -- just something to pass the time while waiting for the good stuff, I figured. Well, this, it turns out, was the best Southampton had to offer that day. Super yeasty beer, it might as well have been a spiced date bread in a glass. Big christmas spices like nutmeg, clove, linger over a nice malty base of nut and bread flavors. Some acidity, especially towards the end, but it gets lost in the significant eff emerging with temp.
