Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Pretty good beer. Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours a light brown with almost no head and little lace retention. Faint aroma, almost undetectable, of light and sweet malts. Flavor is interesting, not like my usual fare. Sweet and malty up front with - what’s that? - some traces of fruitiness. After the initial taste the flavor morphs into something more bitter with some noticeable hop character. Light to medium in body with nice carbonation. This beer leaves a slightly bitter, sticky aftertaste, somewhat akin to an IPA. Very sneaky, Mr. Altbier. I’ll have to try this again.

Pint on tap at local bar. Pours a dark brown color, minimal head. Aroma is very subtle, perhaps malty and yeasty. Taste is similar with high malt character and a little doughy. No real body or aftertaste but sits well on the palate and isnt too rough. Overall nice drink, not too heavy and a good change of pace from more bitter/spicy beers from southampton.

Bottle. Clear copper body with thin head. Aroma of German hops. Pretty crisp and fizzy. On the dry side, with only slight caramel maltiness. Rugged, earthy hops. Bit of an RC Cola aftertaste going on. Pretty good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this beer. Pours a beautiful maroon body with no head. Aroma is that of caramel, roasted malts and nuts, and also citrus hops. Flavor reminds me of an English bitter. Palate is smooth, creamy and a nice crisp finish.

12 oz bottle pours a light brown with a thin white head. Cereal grains in the nose with a touch of flowers. Malty flavors. Light bitterness and slightly grainy malts that aren’t bad little more nutty and roasty than typically expected. Touch of earthy bitterness that lingers in the finish. Seems like an alt bier should be, the earthy bitterness is a little overdone. But overall drinkable and decent.

Neutral amber color; clear. Good start to the head, but it dies out to thin layer of minute bubbles. Light occasional, spotty lace Creamy and malty; light round bitterness in the background. This is a smooth beer with a creamy body and a fine carbonation, like an expensive champagne. Mostly malty, but there is a nice hop kick in the swallow. This is an easy-to-drink beer that is true to style.

12oz bottle as an extra. Pours a lightly hazed deep copper color with a big frothy off white head. Nose was big on roasted malts and a little skunky. Taste is mostly again roasted malts with a kind of nutty finish. Not really sure what to expect from this style, decent brew overall.
