Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Poured into a snifter, this brew is a nice rich caramel color with a moderate but quick off white head. It’s got a buttery caramel aroma with bright hoppy tones. Smooth and medium dry, there’s a fruitiness that I cannot place, and a nice caramel backbone. This is a great alt. Please let it be noted: my bottle indicates Southampton bottling in Wilkes-barre, PA, not NY, sold as the Southampton Altbier.

Not bad, not great. Caramel malt flavor with a little bitter hops on the finish. Try it once to see if you like it.

Bottle pours medium golden to copper color with an off white fluffy head. Slightly sweet aroma with a bit of yeast and biscuits. Dry bitterness at the beginning of the taste. Slight bread din the body as well. Medium body. Not bad but not outstanding.

Bottle. Poured a clear amber-red color with a 1/4 inch off-white head that quickly faded to a ring. Aroma of toasted malt, soft caramel, a light spiciness, and some faint fruitiness. Smooth, moderately sweet entry with some light crispness leads into a moderate toasted malt flavor with hints of caramel and doughy bread followed by a lightly bitter hop presences with some faint fruit notes that rounds out the finish. Moderate carbonation and decent mouthfeel. Overall, a decent beer that is easy to drink, but it lacks standout qualities.

Brown-Amber. Fast, creamy head. Aroma: Malt, spices, caramel. Flavor: The same with a bitter finish. Overall, I’m not impressed.

Enjoyed via 12oz bottle. Pours a deep brown with a slight light-tan head. Nose of some munich and crystal (60-80?) malts. Nice balance of sweetness and hop bitterness on the palate, although it leans toward malt. Finishs a little sweet, but not so much as to make it difficult to drink. Not the best American interpretation of Dusseldorf Alt, but pretty solid.

My beer had a different label which clearly said Altbier on it. My rating might be a little off because I drank it right from the bottle (no idea how it looks) but the aroma was really good for the style. Soapy, sweet. The taste was impressive as well. I had this one at the hotel bar I was staying at, and wasn’t expecting much, but I ended up liking it. It had a nice candystore flavor to complement the usual soapiness that I get from this style of beer.

Bottled, but it was labeled simply alibier so there goes the mystery for me. Still a great beer though, paired quite well with food as most German brews do. The maltiness is prevalent but a bit of hoppy sweetness to balance, quite enjoyable.
