Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Great beer with a very unique flavor and body. Very refreshing and quite filling. A great after dinner beer. A great American Altbier.

12 oz bottle, labelled "Altbier". Pours dark orange with small off-white head. Aroma is sweet and malty with some earth, caramel, and slight yeasty notes. Flavor is, again, on the sweet side, but fortunately not to the point of cloyingness. A pretty nice toasted malt character dominates, with some earth, tanned leather, and dried fruits in there, too. There’s just a touch of hoppy edge in the finish. Not bad.

12oz bottle labeled Altbier. Pours a clear copper with a moderate sized off white head, that shows great retention. Aromas of sweet malt, caramel, and some light citrus. Flavors the same, sweet malt, bread, and a smooth finish. This bottle was definitely better than the first that I tried. A well crafted easy drinking session beer.

12oz bottle 2/27/09 (Knightly Spirits)-Had as Southampton Altbier. Pours a medium brown with no head or carbonation. Aroma of malt. Taste of malt, caramel, and toffee. This medium bodied beer is very well blanced and even throughs in a little hops as well. Pretty tasty.

This was an excellent beer. Sour cherries throughout, without the carbonation and acidity of a lambic. Nice malty characeter and has an extra dimension to it that is sweet and not cloying. Very good, btu a bit different.

Pours a dark brown with a good deal of ruby highlights. Very clear. Good sized frothy white head that leaves a little lace as it resides. A semi-sour nose of cherries and port with a honey malt sweetness jumps out backed by a soft floral aroma. I wouldn’t ordinarily call it appetizing but for some reason or another I am curious. Flavor and nose are pretty much dead on with each other. A sour fruitiness with a prominent caramel malt flavor profile. Finishes sweet and sour with a lingering bitterness. Body has good density and the texture is very smooth. Not my style but overall not bad.

Bottle as Altbier, @ Redlight Redlight. This is a bottle full of WIN. Deep bronze color, firm head. Nose is pungent with a deep melanoidin malt that hints at a vinous fruitiness somewhat reminscent of port wine - but then its coupled with a strongly perfumed floral hop. Man, this is just a dead on altbier flavor with a nice creamy palate, firm malt presence (toffee, cookies, brown sugar) and a serious hop bitterness. Hop flavoring tends to floral. Long bitter finish. They just nailed it.
