Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

12oz bottle as Altbier. Pours a dark, but close to see-through ruby red, almost brown/amber body with a small, dirty-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is pretty caramel malty and sweet. Some cherry aroma in there as well, but not really picking up any bitterness or hop aroma. There is a bit of roasted caramel that develops as this warms. Flavor is pretty similar. Somewhat more bitter than the aroma, but mainly sweetly malted. Moderate caramel malts and a touch of cherries. Light bitterness comes through at the end. Finish is lightly acerbic with a little bit of roasted caramel. Pretty dry and sticky palate. Medium bodied and clean. Overall, a very easy drinking beer with more taste than I was expecting. I guess because my expectations were so low, this exceeded them. Not too bad.

Bottle - Southampton Altbier - Poured a dark reddish amber in color with a small white head that faded to a thin covering over the beer. Aroma is malty and sweet with hints of roasted malts and caramel. Flavor was a bit surprising... I expected something a bit sweeter, based on the aroma... it has a nice malt structure, but is much more bitter than I would have guessed. Finish is short, clean bitter and slightly astringent. While is is an easy drinking beer, the astringency at the end is unpleasent... just OK.

Purchased as Southampton Altbier. The apperance is a very dark brown (though still somewhat transparent); little head. The aroma is very strong. The flavor is moderately strong, and it’s a malty flavor. It’s a rather good beer, and although I normally have an aversion to altbiers, this one stands out as being of high quality.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark copper with an almost non-existent off white head. Roasted malt aroma with strong hints of caramel and hops. Tastes exactly as the aroma suggests – malty with a hoppy, caramel finish (though not too strong). An excellent beer for the price.

Pours a dark copper color with a medium sized off white head that slowly fades and leaves a little lacing behind. The aroma is heavy on the caramel malt, molasses, and some toasted grains and malt. The flavor is again malt forward with the caramel and molasses to go with some dark fruit and a hint of hops. Medium bodied and fairly smooth that has a slightly bitter sweet finish. This was my first of this style and it was pretty good, but nothing crazy.

Bottle. Copper brown pour with minimal off-white head. Sweet caramel malts. Nose also of hazelnuts and buttered popcorn. Sweet beer but with a bitter finish. I could probably enjoy this often but only one at a time.

Draft at Peekskill Brewery. Pours a clear light brown with a medium thin tan head. Aroma is caramel with hints of nutmeg and other spices. Medium thin body with ample carbonation. Finish is almost metallic, with a bit of smoke or toast, and just a hint of bitter.
