Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

(10/25/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Southampton. Says 5.2% on the board. Clear copper color. Aroma of malt, toasted notes and a bit of hops. Sweetish malty flavor with a bit of toastiness, caramel, and dry hoppy finish with some herbal notes. Medium-bodied.

Bottle from level4. Thanks man! Copper colored brew with a nice thin head. Sweet malty aroma of some fruits, caramel, a touch of must, and toast. Sweetish flavors of fruit, caramel, light hop bitterness. Decent session beer, but nothing overly complex.

An attractive russett, copper color. A very minerally aroma with slight malt. Tastes of apple, citrus, leather barn and funk with thin and prickly mouthfeel.

A dark copper red with a little thin scummy looking head, but not really much to speak of on that front. Aroma is malty vanilla extract and raisins with some generic gummi bears. The flavor has a sort of roasty grain with a little brown sugar and even some watered down coffee. Watered down kind of describes the beer well. It is really thin and has a touch of hop bitterness, but in the words of dpjuart, "tastes like a slightly overhopped Oktoberfest." I agree.

Bottle. Pours light amber with some dirty yellow. Aroma is slight. Upon sipping, I first tasted some soft malt and bread, followed by a tartness and the essence of soda cracker. The palate feels average, but there is a curious sticky-dryness towards the finish. Oh, and amongst the finishing flavors is some smokiness which adds to the mystique of this brew. Unfortunately, Secret Ale only comes together moderately well.

Brewed in the USA !!! (KSBF) Pours a dark amber color with a sm white head. The aroma is kind of grainy and hoppy. The taste is much of the same with a hint of fruit. Not bad, would try again.

From Bottle (Altbier). Poured deep ruby/copper. Off-White bubbly head. Aroma malty, fruity. Flavor of caramel in the front. Slight bitterness in the back. Bread, malts, and hints of chocolate. Medium body. A little over carbonated.
