Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottle. Pours light amber with some dirty yellow. Aroma is slight. Upon sipping, I first tasted some soft malt and bread, followed by a tartness and the essence of soda cracker. The palate feels average, but there is a curious sticky-dryness towards the finish. Oh, and amongst the finishing flavors is some smokiness which adds to the mystique of this brew. Unfortunately, Secret Ale only comes together moderately well.

Brewed in the USA !!! (KSBF) Pours a dark amber color with a sm white head. The aroma is kind of grainy and hoppy. The taste is much of the same with a hint of fruit. Not bad, would try again.

From Bottle (Altbier). Poured deep ruby/copper. Off-White bubbly head. Aroma malty, fruity. Flavor of caramel in the front. Slight bitterness in the back. Bread, malts, and hints of chocolate. Medium body. A little over carbonated.

Bottle of Southampton Altbier. 1/4 inch head with good retention. Decent carbonation and nice lacing. Poured a copper color with red and orange hues. Malt aroma, small hop presence - more the same with the flavor. Interesting malts, not quite like a lot of things I have tasted. Sweetness up front, some bitter seems to catch up and both end softly in the finish. I don’t know, here’s the bottom line on this one: I wish it was better, or just brought more to the table. It seems lacking, and somewhat just a middle-of-the-craft-beer pack kind of beer. Kind of an interesting take, a different malt sweetness... but kind of forgettable.

Draught at GABF 2008. Clear golden coloured with a medium sized off white head. Fruity aroma of butter and caramel. Fruity flavour of caramel and hops. Hoppy finish.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a small disappearing off white head. The aroma was moderately sweet caramel malt with an addition of a roasted quality. There is a slight fruitiness, but no real hop presence. The flavor is much like the aroma. I get the caramel malt and roasted qualities along with a light fruitiness. There is a bitterness in the finish that adds to the flavor. Medium bodied with perhaps a bit too much carbonation.

12 oz bottle pour. Coppery ambe color with a head that disapperas too fast to classify. Sweetish aroma, with a light, almost watered down flavor and almost no finish. Slightly above averag e beer, but nothing special.

Had this written down as Southampton Altbier. Dark amber pour with a thick white head with bubbles that reminded me of pancake batter on the griddle. Flavor was watered down, very malty with little else. Did not taste particularly "fresh" like I hoped.
