Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottled. Poured clear deeper orangey-brown with a short-lived cap of beige head. The aroma picked up sweet toasted caramel and floral notes with a little semi-sweet chocolate behind. The flavor found sweeter chocolate, caramel, and tea along with other medium-dark sugars.. odd blend that was just OK.. sweet finish with light leafy bitterness. Medium-bodied with OK balance on the palate.. sticky back-end.. meh.

Bottle, now labeled as the SPH Altbier (instead of Secret Ale). Pours an amber/brown with a thick, light tan head. Aroma of flowery hops, light sweet malt. Flavor of burnt, roasted malt, prunes, buttery popcorn, bread/wheat. Decent palate. Surprisingly lager-like. A nice refreshing beer although the flavors didn’t particularly appeal to me.

Bottle. Pours copper, with a fluffy, sticky, beige head. Clean malt aroma, with caramel and a touch of hops. Thin body. Light honey malt and earthy hops in the flavor. Not bad, very drinkable.

Columbia, SC - Total Wine - 12 oz bottle. Darl copper pour, light but persistent khaki colored head. Aroma of kids cereal - Fruity Pebbles comes to mind. Flavor has an earthy bent to it with some cola notes, a hint of unsweetened chocolate and caramel. Smooth mouthfeel. Been a while since I had an alt. Enjoyable.

On tap at Capones sampled with Stegosaurus. A brown copper pour mild malty aroma. Caramel flavor with a touch of hop but it didn’t seemed balanced too well.

A clearish crimson-brown beet with a decent off-white head. The aroma is all malt: caramel, chocolate, some burnt notes. The flavor is a bit weaker version of the same, lacking any real hop chararcter to speak of. Mouthfeel is a bit watery.

Dark red brown body with no head. Light bodied with many mild malt flavors. A small metallic presence in the dry / hop finish. No edges. Very little aroma. Cold conditioning. Dark tastes rendered smooth and clean.
