Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottle. Dark copper pour with a nice, but dminishing off-white head. Malty, yeasty nose of bread, sweet caramel, dough and light grassy hops. The flavor is more sweet than bitter, but does finish with a light bite. Medium body and watery texture. Plenty of carbonation. Slightly sticky at the end. Not the strongest Southampton beer I’ve had. Could take or leave it.

Draft: Poured a dark red color with not a ton of head. The aroma was earthy tones with grass and lemon present. The flavor was a bit malty and a bit sweet. Overall, this is not a beer I could drink a lot of and actually I didn’t like very much.

Bottle. Deep mahogany brown with thin strip of bubbles lining the rim of the galss. Not really a head per se. Malty aroma with some grassy hops. A bit dry, slightly bitter on the finish. Lively carbonation. OK

12oz bottle: Pours a deep crimson and brown. Sweet honey and fresh bread nose, with a touch of lemony hops taboot. Fizzy, light body is slightly tart to start. The malts are a bit muddled from here, offering only light notes of sweet toffee and butterscotch. Drinks clean, but nothing really special here.

12oz bottle can’t remember where i got this one either Brian or from my summer secret santa 07 that I still can’t figure out who sent me the fine box from PA. Sweet candy toffeee aroma. Held to light body color is red and had decent off white head. Body has a carbination to it that actually takes away some the sweetness which is good for me. Some toffee and mild caramel flavors also present. Good carbinated belch on finish. So probst to the brewer.

Pours a very nice ruddy bronze w/ half-finger creamy offwhite head and some shards of lacing. Nose has mildly sweet caramel/treacle character, light grassy hop aroma. More caramel and toffee on the lighter palate, slight munich malt sourness, some darker grape notes, and finishes very clean with very little bitterness, like a fruitier lager. Certainly palatable, but nothing mind-blowing.

Coppery and thin with a light head. Rich creamy malt aroma. Flavor is somewhat boring and lightly sour. A mediocre beer with a very good aroma.
