Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Coppery amber colored clear pour with a greyish head. Sweet slightly tart malt smell. Nice. Almost lightly nutty as well. Smooth creamy mildly sweet and tart maltiness. Very easy drinking, friendly but a bit unique as well. Nice beer in a style I’m fairly unfamiliar with. Thanks Dave!

12 oz bottle-clear amber color w/a slight white head. Slight malt aroma. Flavors of roasted malt, almonds, caramel, & dates. Has a nice hop bite on the back end which gives it a nice bitter finish. Very easy drinking brew, not complicated, but enjoyable. Definite session brew. Long, bitter finish. Kind of reminds me of a Fat Tire, but with a little more flavor.

Dark amber almost purple color with a small beige head. Aroma of sweet malts with some fruit. Flavor of nut and some caramel and fruit. The carbonation is pretty strong.

12 oz bottle. Pours, smells and tastes kinda like a nut brown. Brownish coloring, off white head, nutty aroma, and a solid nutty taste. Not billed as a nut brown tho, so won’t call it that. Not a bad brew tho, and got it at close out price. That’ll work.

9/25/08 bottle labeled altbier poured to a shaker has a one finger off white head. aroma is mostly malted lacking the previous sweetness and a little musty basement. flavor is loaded with minerals, malted base, and bitterness from hops. finish is lingering with bitterness. 10/10/07 bottle labeled secret ale poured an amber in color with a thin head on the beer and light carbonation. smell is of malts, caramel, and some sweetness. taste is smooth, plenty of malts, and finishes with a slight bitterness. has a spicy bite from the hops as it is drank but the malt keeps it down, i guess it is in line for what the style is.

an altbier that is somewhat overcarbonated and lacking in smoothness otherwise often found in this style. for me the big secret only screws with my head and keeps me from appreciating the attributes unique to each wonderful style of beer. maybe it would be more mellow on tap...

Pours dark reddish amber with a thin, fully receding tan head. Aroma of grainy caramel, grassy hops, and light toffee flavors. Taste is crystal malt, caramel, some fruity notes of dates and nuts, light herbal hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft carbonation. Enjoyable and easy to drink Alt.
