Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottle. Sticke, eh? Caramel and toast malt nose with bready, earthy malt overtones and lighter sticky hop undertones. Dark copper body, clear but approaching brown, with a pillowy beige head. Crisp taste, medium body with just a tad too much water, mostly just bitter caramel, dark and dry and malty. Reminiscent of a corn base at times with an earthy, nearly nutty side. Forgettable.

Clear, dark copper brown color. Medium off-white head that sticks around and provides decent lacing. Aroma is heavy on the caramel malts, with a bit of dark fruit and some hints of molasses. Flavor is again malty, with caramel and brown sugar providing the background. Dark fruits, perhaps figs and maybe even some faint cherries, are present. There is a mild floral hoppiness, but this beer is weighted towards the malty side of balanced. Body is smooth, but a bit watery. Slightly bitter on the finish, with a lingering aftertaste. Decent brew, but nothing special.

Dark coppery color. Thick head that laces well, white. Very citrusy, good hops. Good full mouthfeel. Nice beer, would get it again.

(Bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/boothbay/ target=blank>1828 Vintage House) A little bland and watery but that seems pretty common in several of this style I’ve had...Pours clear darkish iced-tea brown with two fingers of khaki head. Aroma of light caramel and licorice. Mouthfeel fairly smooth but a little loose and watery. Some droopy rings of lacing. Flavor is pretty timid but has notes of light caramel, brown sugar, licorice and tea. Interesting flavor profile but just needs a little more of it. Less filtration may help flavor and texture.

POurs light brown with red hues. The fruit from the hops show on the aromas and the malt really dominates the palate. It finishes with some depth.

Lots of carbonation, murky ruby brown. Sweet aroma of apple juice, and light hops. Flavor in very lightly sweet, sort of watery but it works for this one. I could really drink a lot of these. Little dry with a light aftertaste.

Bottled. Mild malty aroma with dusty grain, light nutty character, neutral fruits, and mild estery je ne sais quoi. Has the aroma of a German altbier, though. Dark coppery-amber clear, with thin off-white lacing head. Medium watery body with medium-light carbonation. Starts with a rich malty character, typical of the altbier and even doppelbock style. Mild sweetness, with dry nutty component on back of tongue. Neutral fruits, estery. Light molasses. Fairly dry finish with note of bubblegum. Light bitter after. I am an altbier fan, however, so my number might be a little higher than others.

Pours a very nice dark copper with a off white head. Lively carbonation. Lightly coffee aroma with some floral scents. Fairly sweet with a slight short lasting hop kick on the finish.

Same 6 pack re-rate: do NOT serve this one too cold, the head vanishes and the flavor goes to hell in a hand basket.
