Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottled at Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Clearnut broen, small head. Buttery nose. Mid-sweet with medium body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Lightly roasty, never earthy nor soft. Feels like a simple sketch of an altbier.

12oz bottle. Color of Southern SweetTea. Medium brown. It has a nice layer of tan foam floating on the surface. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and a good bit of musty, earthiness. Hint of Munich Malts?? This beer looks and smells exactly how I’d imagine an Altbier to be! Thin body. Flavor has a nice toasted grain, burnt sugars, nuttiness, and an unique mineral water finish. Earthy hop character, a bit of grass. Man. this beer would taste great with a juicy burger with gouda. yum.

Bottle at Monks Café, Wallingatan, Stockholm. Pours out in a crystal clear brownish amber appearance with a firm rocky off-white head. Earth, caramel, nuts and mild dried fruits in the aroma. Medium-bodied with notes of burnt caramel, fudge, grass and cookies. Long firm balanced finish of burnt caramel, nuts, minerals and spicy hops.

Clear copper body, with short white head, damp aroma, bit of earhty fruits between some strong hops and sweet malt. Noticeably carbonated, a great dinner ale, with a clean finish.

Malty raisins with hints of black strap molasses on the nose. Clear brownish copper color, small soapy head. Subtle raisin water and cracker sweetness, noticeable bitter bite, perhaps a little off balance. Lively carbonation, silky medium mouth feel, smooth satisfying finish. Could use a little more focus, but has some tasty elements and was very enjoyable.

Purchased at the Headkeeper in Greensburg, looking for something different from my RIS routine. Looks decent, not much head, dark brown liquid, nice carbonation saves it from being just average. Smells kind of fruity, lightly spicy. Reminds me of an adjunct lager but cleaner. Tastes very crisp and dry, again almost lagery, which makes sense considering this is basically a "Lagered ale." Not much in the way of depth but refreshing no less. Mouth is thin and high in carbonation. Good, may have to give this one another go.

aroma is of salami and pepper, for some reason. pours dark brown with minimal head. flavor has some buttery warmness, with some anise and and dark fruit likes dates and raisin. immediate alcohol burn, which was unexpected. leaves a rum-like cakey aftertaste. quite intriguing.
