Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Pours a nice dark amber, very little head. Taste has a sweetness to it, which I liked, but it fades quickly. With a little more umph behind it, it would have been very nice.

Deep red colored beer with a thin white head. Malty aroma with a butter rum raisin aroma with some notes of cherry and caramel. Flavor is rather sweet and buttery with some dark fruits in the mix and a slight bitterness at the finish. Sort of uninspired tasting.

Clear, dark mahogany body with a small, off-white head. The aroma is herbal, toffee, light fruit and bread. The flavor is very lightly sweet, lightly bitter with caramel and herbal hops. Medium/light body is thin from filtering with light carbonation.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Ungstrup. Pours ever so slightly hazy, amber golden with a creamy, off-white head leaving laces. Lightly sweet malt aroma. Medium body with vague caramel notes and a dry finish. Decent if not exactly thrilling. 310507

Bottled. A hazy orange beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel - and so is the flavor too with a slightly bitter finish.

Bottled. Orange/dark golden coloured. Uncleaer. Dense off white head. sweetness, light fruits and flowers in the nose. Herbs, spice, light citrus and caramel in the flavour. Is medium bodied. Quite dry. Light caramelly bitterness in the end. Not your everyday alt.

A little more on the sweet malty side the classic Dusseldorf examples I have had but there is plenty of hops to back this malt monster up. September 2008 on tap at the brewpub and just as solid. Page 435 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 190 of 500 Classic Brews to go.
