Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottle. A pretty decent alt, obviously well made. Some light caramelly malt, slight nuttyness, with a nice grassy hop finish. Pleasant mouthfeel, quite clean.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark copper under a fluffy off-white head that had decent retention and left some thin intricate lacing. Aroma is fruity and malty with hints of smoke, hops, and toast. Flavor is fruity as well with a nice crisp hop finish that lingered quite a while. Quite refreshing, but a slight hint of oxidation creeping in on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and creamy in texture with a nice soft active carbonation level. Overall, a pretty nice effort, but it’s a shame Altbiers don’t seem to hold up very well.

pours a dark brown with alot of ruby highlights. The aroma is a light amount of chocolate, caramel, malts and grains. Taste is about the same, decent amount of body for the style....pretty good.

Pours a lightly hazy golden brown. Dense and creamy ivory head. Fizzy. Sheeting lace. Smells of caramel malt. Biscuity. A sugary/molasses-like sweetness. Some faint herbal hops. Tastes of caramel malt, lots of herbal hops in the finish. Bready and grainy. Fruity malt. Surprisingly crisp and a lingering hoppiness. Damn nice and an easy drinker. Go get it.

Bottle (12oz). Deep bubbly clear ruby-red with a small off-white head. Light caramel roast malt aroma, fairly sweet, some yeast, fruit and slightly burnt notes - nice, simple. Taste is a little harsh, a bit of metal, the malt seems diminished beyond recognition, just lingering peppery yeast and faint burnt fruit. Decent body, nice and lively, longish burnt linger - pretty nice, a little thin.
