Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Draught at the brewery. Beer was clear, medium-dark caramel and had an average-sized, creamy-frothy, white, mostly lasting head. The aroma was malty with light notes of toasted grain, moderate notes of cookie and caramel; hoppy with a moderate-ot-heavy note of resin/pine and light notes of herbs and grapefruit; heavily yeasty with notes of sticky, wet, bread dough and a light note of sweat; moderate note of wood and something fruity-floral that reminded me of plumeria. The flavor was lightly-to-moderately sweet, trace acidic, lightly-to-moderately bitter with a long, lightly sweet, lightly-to-moderately acidic, lightly-to-moderately bitter. Tangy yeasty/doughy aftertaste. The body was light, the texture was watery and the carbonation was lively. Light astringency in finish.

12oz. bottle. Light brown-orange with a small off white head.Earthen, spicy noble hop aroma with accents of sweet malt. Biscuity, raisiny tinges on otherwise deep caramelly malt with a mild crisp hop bitterness. Some residual ruddy malt flavors with a mild vegetal resinousness. Mouthfeel is medium light, somewhat smooth and rather crisp.

Draft - Reddish orange color with little head and fruity hop aroma. I’m not sure I understand the name, but this beer was sweet, malty and quite chuggable.

Draft at RFD Washington, 5/5/06: Dark orange with a sticky top. Eminitely smooth, this is a nice well-balanced beer. Fruity aroma. Sweet malt that would go with any food. Excellent.

Draught at Public House 4/27/06. Pours a brownish orange mix with a small off white head. Nose is lightly nutty with some sweet malts and light floral hops. Flavor is more of teh sweet malt with some light caramel and molasses. A hint of fruit, like apples or pears, spice it up a bit and the beer finishes with a velvety feel and a light bitterness.

Poured from a 12oz bottle a brownish orange with a very small off-white head and a little bit of lacing. Aroma was of sweet malts. Flavor was difficult to nail down, it was a bit nutty with a hop bite.

Obtained in a trade with Illinismitty. Pours a clear, medium brown color with a small head and just a tiny bit of lacing. Aroma is malty with hints of nuts and a very slight sweet/floral hint. Flavor is a difficult to describe- bitter and nutty with a very slight hop hint. Coats the tongue and sticks to the palate. Bleh is the best way I can describe this beer. Thanks again Sean!
