Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Slightly cloudy, copper apperance with a thin, off white head and sparce lacing. I like to stick my nose in the glass as soon as I pour a beer for the initial impression, then wait for it to change as it warms. This beers’ aroma was a throwback to the bohemian beers of my youth, with the fresh hops and straw notes fading to a nuttier, bready nose. Mouthfeel was medium bodied and well carbonated. Hops tasted slightly spicy, slightly fruity; nothing really dominated. Balanced nicely by malts that diplayed a subtle nuttiness. Clean, short lived finish. Rerate Feb 09. Aroma this time around struck me as slightly smokey, more toasted malt, rounded out by caramel and freshly ground coffee bean. On the taste buds, less spicy, more fruity. Finish was medium length as opposed to short lived.. Secret Ale name dropped and rebadged as Dusseldorf Style Altbier.

Draft at Capital Ale House. Medium orange amber, OK head. Virtually no aroma. Thinnish caramel, little hops. Nothing offensive, but just not a lot going on here. RERATE: Just wanted to say how much I hate re-badges. This bottle was a bit skunky, so I will just leave up the original numbers.

Bottled. A tart, refreshing, yet *hoppy* altbier. Pours flat with an amber body and modest head. Aroma is equal parts citrus and forest. First sip is lively with a fresh mouthfeel and distinct kick of tartness. Further sips are nuttier - with a sweet smooth finish.

Clear dark amber color. Sweet malt aroma with a touch of grassiness. Flavor is sweet but the grassiness is somewhat detracting.

Deep gold color with some grassy hops in the aroma as well as light fruits. Cloudy taste, sweet with light tangs. Not very complex with a lager style ending.

This is the first beer I have had from this company. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a rich mahogany color with a large tan head. The aroma is sour, malty and nutty with a hint of chocolate. The flavor is sour and bitter with a fruity and nutty undertone and a hint of chocolate on the finish.

I liked the floral fruit aroma. This just has a very well balanced mouth feel. Nice and crisp finish. Well done.
