Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

I thought this beer was gonna be some kind of magical secret, but it’s actually just a regular pretty good beer, balanced malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness, brownish red in color with a decent head and a caramelly smell.

Lightly hazed coppery orange, creamy off white head. Soft nose of toast, nutty caramel, and grains, with lesser tones of milk chocolate and orange zest. Light tangy citrus flavors are well balanced by the toasted caramel malt. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, malty, slightly grainy finish. Decent session ale, but I tend to expect more when I drink SH brews...

Pours a brownish amber color with a small white head. Aroma is malty with hops that smell kinmd of skunky. Flavor is malty with hints of nuts and even honey. Average at best.

Lots of nutty toasted malts int he aroma...like a rich warm loaf of specialty bread. Transparent copper color with a thin fading white head. Mostly just a steady low key malt through all the flavor ranges. Hints of honey and dark breads, but not much else. Pleasant though.

"shhh its a secret this is a very good beer. Poured a copper color with small head. Smelled of malts. Tasted of malts caramel and nuts. Nice beer. Would have this one again."

Poured from 12oz. bottle. Initially a fairly unimpressive head and a slightly stinky nose suggesting the use (or overuse) of Saaz. Fortunately the taste is dominated by much smoother, richer malt flavor that suggests buttered popcorn and toast. Unfortunately the finish is a little lacking. A commendable brew certainly for its cohesion to the style.

Dark golden ale with a small off-white head. Light malt aroma with skunks notes (hops?). Rather dry malt with classy german hops. Rather disappointing for Southampton. May 2005.

Bottle. Pours a lovely bronzed amber with a small tanned head. Nose is malty and sem-sweet with a bit of wet grass, earthiness, Euro hops, and grains. Taste has some dusty cocoa, Euro hops, grass, chewy malts, hint of toffee and pumpernickel bread. Body is medium with a moderate carbonation feel. Finishes with more semi-sweet maltiness, light cocoa, hint of toffee, dark breadiness, and light grassy notes. Not bad.
