Commercial Description:
Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottle thanks to MrBunn. Pour is dark copper with thinnish head. Aromas of cloves and bread. Flavors are similar with notes of apple, and tea. A light coffee shows itself in the background. Palate is a tad weak, but considering the style, not far off. Finish has a funky hint of bitter that floats around the edge.

Good palate with lots of malt. Smooth. True to style, but there is not much to say about this simple, drinkable session beer.

Bottle enjoyed at Grinders in Kansas City. Pours a deep brown with a tight head. The aroma is faint with a good fruitiness and some roasty coffee notes. The flavor is nicely malty and dry with some notes of rum and some good spicy hops for balance.

Sampled at the Beerfestival. Dark reddish brown with offwhite head. some nice peppery hops and caramel maltiness. pretty good. Draft at Redlight. WAY Better fresh on tap. Dark red body. Hops and malts are much crisper on tap and not being left in the sun.

Sampled from 12-oz bottle supplied by joebrew. Pours a semi-hazy dark amber colored brew with an average sized off-white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma of caramel malt, some flowery hops, a touch of bread dough and some white pepper. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of semi-sweet caramel, some flowery hops and white pepper. Finish is semi-sweet with a light caramel aftertaste. Missing some of the dry maltiness I am used to in alts but still enjoyable.

dark, hazy amber with little bit of offwhite head. A style i have only a slight amount of experience with. nice malty but very german aroma. a little thin, but pleasant, nice malt concentration, sweet with a bit of diacetyl. Pleasant but nothing to write about.

I don’t think the beers served at Barleys Brewpub here in Columbus are very good, but their guest taps always offer a very interesting selection, and that is how I came to sample this beer. Is diacetyl part of the altbier style? Seems like most that I have tried have a pretty heavy diacetyl presence. This beer poured a deep amber color in the glass and had good head formation. Aroma was roasty caramel grains and butter. Diacetyl/butter notes also dominated mouthfeel (full, thick and smooth) and flavor (buttery) although other flavor notes were present also...primarily some nice cereal notes and bread-dough. Not a bad beer by any stretch, and not of a style that people typically get too amped-up about. Pleasant and I’d recommend it if you are into the style. If not, cruise past it and pick-up whatever DIPA or RIS is the rage today.

12 oz bottle served in lager glass. Pours a deep amber / orange color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly. Carbonation is heavy. Aromas of wet sourdough, malt, and maybe some pepper. Mouthfeel is watery on the front of the tongue, but sticky on the back, and somewhat fizzy. Sweet medicinal flavor up front yields to a sour finish that I found unpleasant. Not bad, but not something I’ll seek out.
