This is my first encounter with Southampton. Poured a lightly cloudy straw golden. There’s a huge amount of carbonation rising like a tornado from the bottom of my pilsner glass. The head, when poured, was 1+ finger of rocky airy goodness but quickly faded to a light cap. The carbonation is unstoppable. Leaves some airy lacing after each drink that slowly falls back into the body.
I really like a good white ale when I’m in the mood. So the idea of a double white really interested me. I really wasn’t sure what to expect. The nose really sends home what this beer is supposed to be. It has all the white aromas but they are much bigger than usual. When I first opened the bottle all I melled was orange. After the pour lemon took over. Starts off dusty. Then comes a generous squeeze of lemon. Big coriander and if you smell deep the lemon that was there at the beginning. After all this you get a solid dose of spicy yeast and a pinch of white pepper.
The flavor is very much the same as the smell. Again, being a double white, the flavors are a lot bigger than traditional whites. Theres a splash of lemon to start things off along with some coriander. There may be a little too much coriander. Mid-palate the spiciness of the yeast and the white pepper show up and finish things off with the oriander in the background. I said there is too much coriander but that’s just me finding a fault. It’s a very good flavorful beer.
The mouthfeel fits this beer really well. The body is light and refreshing. The huge amount of carbonation is surprisingly soft on the tongue but does wake up the tastebuds with a stimulating tingle.
The drinkability is good. I’m drinking this now and it’s winter. I’m not getting the full refreshing, thirst quenching expierence that I would if it was hotter outside but I can only imagine how good this would be to drink on a hot 90+ summer day. One bomber is enough for now but I’d be good with a cooler of these in the summer.
This is an excellent beer from Southampton and as exciting as a white ale can get. I’m glad I got my hands on this one and I’m looking forward to trying some of their other beers in the near future.
12/9/06 bochi23 (90), USA May 23, 2007 looks good. Taste is good too. Slightly spicy and doughy. Not the best witbeer but solid. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 19, 2007 12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy pale yellow with a medium white head. Slight spicy aroma with hints of coriander and citrus peel. Taste is faintly spicy with hints of lemon, coriander, yeast and dough bread. A grassy finish. Not bad. A good warm day brew. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 16, 2007 Pour is slightly hazed yellow with a thin bright white head...smell is strongly spiced with corriander and clove and has a nice subtle sweetness to it...taste is sharp and sweet up front, with a strongly musty spiciness coming up at the end...lots more citrus than I expected, but it goes well... Boutip (2334), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada May 15, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Moejuck: Poured a cloudy orangey color ale with a nice thick foamy head with better then average retention. Aroma of huge bubblegum wheat and coriander is interesting and quite different from the norm. Taste is spicy with a strange mix between some coriander and huge presence of wheat with a strange bubblegum feeling. Body is definitely full with some adequate carbonation. While this beer is very interesting and innovative, I wonder if bigger is always better and if in this particular case I would probably prefer a regular wit (Allagash, Ommegang..) to provide an interesting but somewhat easy refreshing option. k4df4l (154), DTown, Pennsylvania, USA May 10, 2007 Bottle - pours a cloudy hazy golden color with a decent white foamy head that subsides to a compact skim of bubbles. Aroma is lemons, citrus, wit yeast and spice. Flavor is sweet and tart with the lemons and spice up front followed by fennel seed/coriander flavor and a tart spicy finish. Approp carb and body for style. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA May 5, 2007 Cloudy very pale body with white cover. The aroma is heavily spiced with corriander and orange, some bread dough in there as well. Flavor is spicey, lightly tart and moderately sweet, lots of corriander and citrus. Medium body with high carbonation. mansquito (819), Boston/Philadelphia, USA May 4, 2007 Just coerced a sample of this today. Hella pale, not really cloudy like some other witbiers. Hell of spicy witbier smell like the standard essentially. Has a big head that leaves quickly. Spicy and citrusy just like other witbiers. Covers the high alcohol with a sweetish taste. Nothing really special except for the high alcohol.
